South Africa Visa and Entry Requirements
Most Western passport holders (USA, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, New Zealand) receive 30 days visa-free on arrival at South African ports of entry. No prior approval is needed — present your passport at immigration and receive a 30-day stamp.
Requirements at the border:
- Valid passport (at least 30 days validity beyond planned departure)
- At least one blank page for the entry stamp
- Return or onward ticket (technically required, occasionally checked)
- Evidence of sufficient funds (R5,000/month is the guideline, rarely checked for Western passport holders)
Children require their own passport plus an unabridged birth certificate showing both parents’ names. If travelling with only one parent, a sworn affidavit from the absent parent is required. These rules are strictly enforced.
Extending your stay: Extensions to 90 days total are available through the Department of Home Affairs. Apply before your current authorised period expires. Allow 4–6 weeks processing.
Yellow fever: If arriving from a yellow fever endemic country (most of sub-Saharan Africa), a valid vaccination certificate is required.
