The Durban July is South Africa’s most high-profile horse race — a Grade 1 handicap run over 2,200 metres at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse each first Saturday of July. It has been held since 1897 and has grown into one of the country’s biggest annual social occasions, attracting around 50,000 people to the racecourse and watched by millions on television. The race itself is genuinely competitive, drawing top horses, trainers, and jockeys from across South Africa, but for most attendees the event is as much about fashion, entertainment, and atmosphere as it is about the finishing post.
Fashion and spectacle
The Durban July is famous for its bold dress culture. There is a formal Best Dressed competition with significant prize money, and sections of the crowd go to extraordinary lengths with outfits, hats, and accessories. The event has its own annual theme that guides fashion choices — themes are typically announced several months in advance. Smart casual is the minimum for general admission areas; formal fashion is expected in the grandstands and premium enclosures.
If you want to be part of the fashion scene, plan your outfit around the theme and arrive ready to be photographed. Street style at the Durban July is genuinely inventive and the crowds are appreciative of a well-executed look.
The racing
The July Handicap is the feature race of the day, but a full card of races runs from early afternoon. The racecourse itself is a traditional grass track set in the suburb of Greyville, close to the city centre. Paddock viewing gives you a good look at the horses before each race, and the betting facilities — both on-course totes and with Hollywoodbets directly — are extensive.
Tickets and enclosures
The racecourse is divided into several enclosures at different price points. General admission allows access to the main public areas and terraces. Grandstand and hospitality packages — which include catering and premium viewing — cost significantly more and sell out well in advance. Corporate boxes and VIP hospitality packages are available through the event sponsors. Check hollywoodbets.net/durban-july for current pricing and availability.
Ticket prices range from approximately R300 for general admission to several thousand rand for premium packages (as of 2026 — verify on the official site).
Getting there
Greyville Racecourse is around 3 km from Durban’s city centre. On race day the surrounding roads are heavily congested by mid-morning. Most people use ride-hailing apps or pre-arranged transport. Some hotels in central Durban run shuttle services on the day. Parking is available on-site but fills early; plan to arrive before 10:00 if driving.
Practical tips
- Book accommodation in Durban months in advance — city hotels are almost entirely taken on Durban July weekend.
- The event runs through the afternoon into the evening, with entertainment continuing after the last race.
- July is Durban’s dry winter season — days are typically clear and mild, but evenings can be cool. Bring a jacket for the grandstands.
