Madikwe Game Reserve in North West province is South Africa’s fourth-largest game reserve and one of the country’s best-kept secrets. It covers 75,000 hectares on the Botswana border, holds the Big Five plus one of South Africa’s largest populations of African wild dog, and is entirely malaria-free — a combination that makes it genuinely exceptional for families, couples, and anyone who wants premier safari without malaria prophylactics or the need to fly to Limpopo.

Madikwe is a private reserve with no self-drive access. All game viewing is conducted in open vehicles with guides, and all accommodation is full-board (meals, two game drives per day, and bush walks are included in the rate). There is no day-visitor access and no public camps — every bed in Madikwe is in a private lodge.

The reserve is approximately 360 kilometres from Johannesburg, making it a four-hour drive or a short charter flight from Lanseria Airport.

How Madikwe Lodges Work

All Madikwe lodges operate on an all-inclusive full-board basis: accommodation, all meals, two daily game drives (morning and evening), a bush walk, and non-motorised activities are included in the per-person-per-night rate. Most lodges also include house drinks (local alcohol, soft drinks, and filtered water). Some exclude premium imported spirits and wine cellar selections. Confirm inclusions before booking.

Rates are typically quoted per person sharing. Single supplements of 40–60% apply. Children under 6 are generally not permitted at most private Madikwe lodges — confirm the minimum age policy at booking.

Mid-Range Lodges (approximately R4,500–R7,500 per person per night as of 2026)

This tier offers genuine Big Five guiding, private plunge pools or splash pools at most suites, and meals of a high standard — comparable to what you would pay at similar lodges in Kruger’s private reserves, but without the malaria concern.

Madikwe River Lodge is one of the reserve’s most established properties — 20 suites along the Marico River, with a good wildlife waterhole view from the main deck. The guiding team has a strong reputation for wild dog sightings specifically. River Lodge suits couples and small families (children 10+ permitted).

Jaci’s Safari Lodge and Jaci’s Tree Lodge are sister properties under the same management about 2 kilometres apart — Safari Lodge is larger and family-friendly (from age 6 at Tree Lodge, age 2 at Safari Lodge for accompanied families), while Tree Lodge has suites built into riverine trees for a more theatrical bush experience. Both use the same guide pool and run shared drives on the Madikwe north section.

Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge is community-owned and operated — one of South Africa’s most awarded community-conservation tourism models. 10 suites, good Big Five coverage, and an ownership model that directs revenue directly into the local Balete community. Rates are competitive for the quality and the conservation story resonates with many travellers.

Luxury Lodges (approximately R8,000–R18,000+ per person per night as of 2026)

Etali Safari Lodge is widely considered one of Madikwe’s top two or three properties — 10 suites, each with a private pool and outdoor shower, set on a private concession with exclusive drive access in the evenings (no shared drives with other lodges in this area of the reserve). The wine list and cuisine are notably strong for a bush lodge.

Tuningi Safari Lodge offers six cottages on a private concession in the reserve’s northern section — a small property with an unhurried pace, high guide-to-guest ratios, and consistently strong wildlife density. It regularly places on international top-lodge lists and suits travellers who have done Kruger and want a quieter, more curated experience.

The Bush House operates on a sole-use private basis for groups of up to 10 — a four-bedroom bush house with a private chef, guide, and vehicle. It is particularly popular with family groups who want to travel together without sharing drives with other guests.

Getting to Madikwe

Self-drive: 360 kilometres from Johannesburg via the N4 and R49, approximately 4 hours. The reserve gates are on good tar road. A hire car is useful for getting from Johannesburg to Madikwe — once inside, all movement is on lodge vehicles. /go/car-hire-south-africa for rates.

Charter flight: Madikwe has a small airstrip (Madikwe/Wonderboom charter, 45-minute flight from Lanseria Airport near Johannesburg). Most lodges can arrange charter connections — expect R3,000–R6,000+ per person return depending on aircraft and group size.

Why Madikwe Instead of Kruger?

Madikwe’s key advantages over the better-known Kruger parks:

  • Malaria-free: No anti-malarials required. Safe for young children and pregnant travellers.
  • Closer to Johannesburg: 4 hours by road vs. 4–5 hours to the southern Kruger gates.
  • No self-drive pressure: All vehicles are guided — you won’t share a sighting with 12 other cars.
  • Wild dog: Madikwe has one of South Africa’s highest wild dog population densities — sightings are more reliable here than most reserves.

The trade-off: Madikwe has fewer leopard than Kruger’s private concessions, and the landscape (mixed bushveld and grassland) is less dramatic than some Limpopo reserves. Elephant numbers, while good, are lower than Addo.

Practical Notes

Booking lead time: Etali and Tuningi typically book out 6–10 months ahead for July–August peak and December school holidays. Jaci’s and River Lodge have more availability but still require 3–4 months notice for preferred dates. Budget lodges can sometimes be found on 4–6 weeks notice outside peak periods.

Best season: May–September (dry season) produces the best game viewing — vegetation is low, animals concentrate around water sources, and temperatures are comfortable. December–February is hot and animals disperse more widely, though newborn season (November–January) produces exceptional predator activity.

Travel insurance: With charter flights and remote location, travel insurance for South Africa covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended. Medical facilities are approximately 90 minutes from the reserve centre. For safari experiences at Madikwe and the North West, lodge-guided activities cover everything — no external bookings needed once you are inside the reserve.
