The Garden Route packs an unusual concentration of activities into a relatively compact stretch of coastline — adventure sports, forest hikes, lagoon kayaking, whale watching, and some of the best indigenous forest walking in southern Africa. This guide covers the main activities by town, what they cost, and how to book in 2026.
Tsitsikamma National Park Activities
Tsitsikamma is the eastern anchor of the Garden Route and home to two iconic activities: the Storms River suspension bridge walk and the zip-line canopy tour through the forest canopy.
Entry fee: Approximately ZAR 260 per adult per day for day visitors as of 2026. Children (2–11) approximately ZAR 130. International visitors pay these rates.
Storms River Suspension Bridge Walk
The most-visited activity in Tsitsikamma, and one of the few on the Garden Route that is effectively free once you’ve paid the park entrance fee. A 2.7 km return walk (about 45 minutes each way) through dense coastal forest brings you to three suspension bridges over the Storms River Mouth. The final bridge sits at the river mouth itself, with sea caves visible on either side and the ocean churning below.
The path is well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels. The final descent to the bridge involves some steps. Begin as early as possible — this walk is popular and the first two hours after the gate opens are the quietest.

Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour
One of the original canopy zip-line experiences in South Africa and still one of the best. Ten platforms spread through an indigenous Afrotemperate forest, connected by zip lines at heights of up to 30 metres above the forest floor. The experience lasts approximately 2–3 hours and includes an orientation and safety briefing.
The forest at Tsitsikamma is dominated by yellowwood trees — some over 800 years old — and the canopy tour gives you an entirely different perspective on the scale and density of the forest.

Bloukrans Bridge Bungee Jump
The highest commercial bungee jump in the world at 216 metres. The Bloukrans Bridge spans a deep gorge on the N2 between Plettenberg Bay and Storms River — an unremarkable concrete bridge from road level that conceals a terrifying drop to the river below.
Operator: Face Adrenalin (the sole operator at Bloukrans Bridge).
Cost: Approximately ZAR 1,200–1,500 per person as of 2026 for the full jump. A bridge walk without jumping (you walk out to the midpoint via a catwalk) costs approximately ZAR 200–250.
What to expect: After a safety briefing and harness fitting, you walk out to the jumping platform mid-bridge and are attached by ankle to the bungee cord. Free fall lasts approximately 8 seconds before the cord arrests your descent. The total experience including wait time, briefing, and jump takes approximately 2–3 hours.
Minimum age: 14 years. Weight limits apply (35–150 kg). No prior experience required.

Knysna Lagoon Activities
Knysna’s lagoon is one of the defining features of the Garden Route — a vast body of sheltered water entered from the sea through the narrow gap between the twin sandstone Heads. It creates an ideal environment for watersports, boat trips, and oyster farming.
Knysna Lagoon Kayaking and Paddling
Kayaking on the Knysna Lagoon is one of the most peaceful ways to experience the Garden Route. Rental kayaks are available from Waterfront Drive in central Knysna, and the lagoon is sheltered enough for beginners. A paddle to the Bird Island Nature Reserve (a sandbar within the lagoon) is a popular 3–4 hour round trip.
Cost: Approximately ZAR 150–250 per hour for kayak rental as of 2026. Guided kayak tours (2–3 hours) from approximately ZAR 400–600 per person.
Boat Trips to the Knysna Heads
Multiple operators run short boat trips (30–60 minutes) from the Knysna waterfront out to the Heads and back. The Heads themselves are accessible on foot via a road to Leisure Isle on the eastern side, but the boat view of the narrow passage is considerably more dramatic.

Knysna Oyster Tasting
Knysna produces some of South Africa’s most respected oysters from farms within the lagoon. The annual Knysna Oyster Festival (held in July) brings a large festival atmosphere to the waterfront, but oysters are available year-round at the Knysna Quays and from specialist restaurants.
Where to taste: Thirty4 South Restaurant and Firefly Eating House are both reliable for Knysna oysters in-season; the Waterfront has several casual options with oysters from approximately ZAR 90–130 for six as of 2026.
Robberg Nature Reserve (Plettenberg Bay)
Robberg is a protected rocky peninsula jutting into the sea at Plettenberg Bay — one of the top wildlife and hiking experiences on the Garden Route. The rocky shores are home to a substantial Cape fur seal colony (over 6,000 seals), and great white shark sightings from the Robberg cliffs are not unusual, particularly in winter.
The walks: Three circular routes of varying length:
- The Island Walk (2 km, approximately 45 minutes) — to the base of the peninsula with seal views
- The Circuit Walk (4 km, approximately 1.5 hours) — extends further with cliff views
- The Full Circuit (9 km, approximately 3–4 hours) — the complete loop around the peninsula with boulder scrambling and excellent coastal views

Getting there: 8 km from Plettenberg Bay town centre by car. No public transport.
Wildlife note: Great white shark activity off Robberg has been observed during seal pupping season (November–January) — stay on the cliff-top paths and observe from above.
Wilderness and West End Activities
Wilderness National Park Canoe Trail
The Wilderness National Park protects a series of interconnected lakes and lagoons between George and Knysna. The 5-day guided Wilderness Canoe Trail (SANParks) takes you along the lakes in a canoe, staying in simple overnight trail camps. This is a gentle multi-day adventure suited to paddlers of all levels.

Zip-Lining at Gorge Road Adventures (Wilderness area)
A smaller zip-line operation near George (approximately 20 km from Wilderness) offering a series of lines through indigenous forest. Less well-known than Tsitsikamma, less crowded, and an alternative for those who want to avoid the queues at the main canopy tour.
Cost: Approximately ZAR 550–750 per person as of 2026.
Whale Watching
Southern right whales visit the southern coast of South Africa from June through November to calve. The Garden Route — particularly the bay at Plettenberg Bay and the Brenton-on-Sea coastline near Knysna — has reliable sightings during this window.
Shore-based viewing: No boat required. The cliffs at Robberg (Plettenberg Bay), the Knysna Heads viewpoint, and the Wilderness Beach stretch all give you elevated positions from which to spot blows and breaching activity. Southern rights are identifiable by their smooth back (no dorsal fin) and heavily calloused heads.
Boat-based whale watching: Several operators in Plettenberg Bay run whale-watching boat trips from June to November:

Cango Caves and Ostrich Farms (Oudtshoorn Detour)
Oudtshoorn, set in the Little Karoo just north of the Garden Route over the Outeniqua Mountains, is a 45-minute detour from George via the Outeniqua Pass (N12/R29 route). It is home to the Cango Caves (one of Africa’s largest cave systems) and a string of ostrich farms.
Cango Caves: Heritage Site of South Africa. Standard guided tour approximately ZAR 190 per adult (45 minutes through the main chambers). Adventure tour (involves crawling through narrow passages) approximately ZAR 230 per adult as of 2026. Booking recommended.

Practical Tips
- Book Tsitsikamma canopy tour and Bloukrans bungee in advance during school holidays — queues at both can be significant.
- Drive the N2 in both directions: The coastal views change significantly depending on which way you’re driving and the light conditions.
- Petrol: Fill up in major towns (George, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay). The stretch between Plettenberg Bay and Storms River is about 75 km with limited services.
- Car hire: Hire from George Airport (the most practical entry point), Cape Town, or Port Elizabeth. Standard cars are fine — no 4x4 required for the main N2 route. Expect approximately ZAR 400–700 per day for a small automatic as of 2026.
