Garden Route Travel Guide - Drive, Stops, and Where to Stay

The Garden Route is South Africa’s most-driven holiday corridor — a 300 km stretch of the southern coast between Mossel Bay and Storms River where mountains fall abruptly to the Indian Ocean, indigenous forest covers the coastal hills, lagoons open behind sand bars, and the light in the late afternoon is startlingly clear. It is not a single destination but a sequence of towns, national parks, and landscapes best experienced by hire car over four to seven days.

Most travellers drive it east from Cape Town, stopping at Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, and Tsitsikamma before arriving in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) — from where you can fly back to Johannesburg or Cape Town. The route is unhurried, the roads are good, and each major stop has enough to fill a full day.

The Drive: Key Stops in Order

Mossel Bay (0 km)

The unofficial western start. Mossel Bay is a working harbour town with a pleasant beachfront and the Bartholomeu Dias Museum Complex — marking the spot where Portuguese explorers first landed in 1488 (R60 entry, open daily). The town’s beaches are good for swimming in summer, sheltered from the prevailing wind. Most people pause briefly and push on east.

Detour from Mossel Bay: The Outeniqua Pass (N9 inland) rises over the mountains to George — a scenic alternative if you want to break the coastal route with highland farms and mountain scenery.

George and Wilderness (60–75 km)

George is the Garden Route’s urban hub — airport, supermarkets, car hire. It is not a tourist destination in itself, but it is the practical base for the western Garden Route. Wilderness (15 km east) is the first genuinely scenic stop: the Touw River estuary behind the beach has canoe and SUP hire, the Wilderness National Park has birdlife-rich lagoons and forest walks, and the beach itself stretches for kilometres.

Activities in Wilderness: River kayaking on the Touw River (around R350 for 2 hours from Eden Adventures), the Giant Kingfisher Trail through riverine forest, and swimming in the sheltered west-facing beach.

Knysna (120 km)

Knysna is the Garden Route’s most-visited town and its emotional core. The defining feature is the Heads — two sandstone cliffs that frame the narrow entrance to the Knysna Lagoon. From the eastern Head lookout point (free, 5-minute drive from town) you can watch the Indian Ocean swells push through the gap into the calm lagoon beyond.

The Knysna Lagoon has excellent oyster farming — Knysna oysters are well known across South Africa. Have them at the Knysna Oyster Company on the waterfront (about R100–150 for six, fresh-shucked with lemon) or at the Featherbed Company restaurant with lagoon views. The Waterfront area has good restaurants, craft shops, and a small brewery (Mitchell’s Knysna Brewery, est. 1984, South Africa’s oldest craft brewery).

Knysna Forest: The indigenous Afrotemperate forest inland from Knysna is home to a small, critically endangered population of Knysna forest elephants — estimated at around 10 individuals. The Elephant Walk in the Garden Route National Park (Knysna section) takes you through this ancient forest. Entry R280 per adult. You are unlikely to see elephants but the forest itself — tree ferns, yellowwoods, and moss-covered stumps — is worth the walk.

Plettenberg Bay (180 km)

“Plett” is the Garden Route’s most glamorous town — a popular summer destination for Johannesburg and Cape Town families. The beaches (Robberg Beach, Lookout Beach, Central Beach) are among the finest on the South African coast, with warm-ish Indian Ocean water (18–22°C in summer) and backed by lagoon-side holiday homes.

Robberg Nature Reserve (entry R240 adults) occupies the rocky peninsula south of town — a 4 km circular walk over cliffs and along boulder beaches past a Cape fur seal colony of 5,000–6,000 animals. Allow 2–3 hours. The view back toward Plettenberg Bay from the peninsula is one of the most photographed on the Garden Route.

Ocean Blue Adventures runs daily whale and dolphin boat trips from Plettenberg Bay (approximately R950 per person, 2 hours). Humpback and southern right whales pass close to shore from June to November. Bottlenose and common dolphins are present year-round.

Birds of Eden is a free-flight bird sanctuary near Plett on the N2 (about R330 adults) — a 2.3-hectare mesh dome housing African birds of prey, parrots, and forest species in a natural setting. Adjacent to Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary, which can be combined as a half-day excursion.

Tsitsikamma National Park (240–260 km)

The most dramatic section of the Garden Route. The park covers 68 km of coastline where rivers have cut deep gorges through fynbos and indigenous forest before reaching the sea. Storms River Mouth is the main access point — park entry R228 per adult (SANParks).

The Suspension Bridge Walk (included in park entry) crosses the Storms River gorge on a swaying bridge 77 m above the river mouth — the views down to the turquoise water below are vertiginous and spectacular. Allow 1.5 hours for the return walk through coastal forest.

Otter Trail: South Africa’s most famous hiking trail runs 41.6 km along the Tsitsikamma coastline over 5 days/4 nights. Permit from SANParks — R3,900 per person for the full trail (including all overnight huts). Hugely oversubscribed; book 11 months ahead when the booking window opens.

Bloukrans Bridge Bungee: The world’s highest commercial bungee jump (216 m), from the arch of the N2 highway bridge 7 km west of Storms River village. Face Adrenalin operates it — around R1,200 per jump (adrenalin.co.za). Spectators free.

Oudtshoorn (detour, inland)

Oudtshoorn lies 60 km north of George in the Klein Karoo — a semi-desert valley famous for ostrich farming. It is off the main coastal route but a logical add-on, especially if you have 2 extra days or are looping back inland.

Cango Caves — an extraordinary cave system stretching at least 4 km into the Swartberg Mountains. The standard tour (R240 adults) takes you through massive chambers of stalactites and stalagmites. The Adventure Tour (R290) adds tight squeeze sections not for the claustrophobic. Open daily.

Ostrich farms: The Highgate Ostrich Show Farm is the most popular (R250 adults, includes feeding and a ride if you want one — and most people do not). The Safari Show Farm offers a similar experience. Both include a Karoo buffet lunch.

Swartberg Pass: One of the most dramatic mountain passes in South Africa — a 24 km dirt road built in the 1880s over the Swartberg Mountains between Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert. The views from the top (1,585 m) are extraordinary. Standard sedan-navigable in dry weather.

Getting There and Around

From Cape Town: George Airport (GRJ) has multiple daily Airlink and South African Airways flights from Cape Town (55 min) and Johannesburg. Hire a car at George and drive east.

Hire car: Essential — there is no useful public transport along the Garden Route. Standard sedan is adequate for all major stops. Petrol stations are available in all major towns. Compare hire car rates via GetRentacar.

From Port Elizabeth: If you drive west to east and end in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), there are frequent flights back to Cape Town and Johannesburg. This is the most efficient one-way routing.
