Pretoria’s accommodation geography is simpler than Johannesburg’s — the safety gradient is less extreme and the city is more compact. The core choice is which part of the city suits your itinerary: Arcadia for the monuments, Hatfield for the food scene, Menlyn for families and longer stays, or the CBD fringe for budget travellers comfortable navigating independently. For context on what to do during your stay, see the Pretoria city guide.
Arcadia — Best for Union Buildings and Monuments
Hotels from ZAR 1,200 to ZAR 3,500+ per night
Arcadia sits on the eastern flank of the Pretoria CBD, on the hillside below the Union Buildings. It’s the single most convenient base for visitors whose itinerary centres on Pretoria’s major monuments — the Union Buildings are a short walk (or a R40 Uber), Freedom Park and the Voortrekker Monument are a 10–15 minute drive south.
The neighbourhood itself is leafy and relatively quiet. Embassies cluster here, and there’s a calm, slightly formal character to the streets around the Union Buildings precinct. It lacks the restaurant density of Hatfield, but a handful of solid options are within reach and Hatfield is only 10 minutes away by Uber.
Court Classique Suite Hotel (Arcadia): 59 suites with kitchen facilities, swimming pool, secure parking. From approximately ZAR 1,600/night. The best balance of location and value in Arcadia — the Union Buildings gardens are a 10-minute walk. Suited to visitors spending more than one night who want kitchen facilities and secure parking.
Sheraton Pretoria Hotel (Arcadia, directly opposite the Union Buildings): Pretoria’s flagship five-star. 172 rooms, two restaurants, outdoor pool, spa. From approximately ZAR 3,500/night as of 2026. The best-positioned hotel in the city — the view of the Union Buildings from the upper floors is hard to beat, and the gardens are directly across the road.
Who Arcadia suits: Visitors with one to two days focused on the main monuments. History-oriented travellers. Business visitors to government buildings. Anyone who wants to walk to the Union Buildings without thinking about logistics.
Hatfield — Restaurant District, Gautrain Access
Hotels from ZAR 900 to ZAR 2,200 per night
Hatfield is 5 km east of the CBD and anchored by the University of Pretoria. It’s the liveliest neighbourhood in the city for food, coffee, and evening options — Burnett Street and Hilda Street have the concentration of restaurants Pretoria’s embassy set and university population sustain. The Gautrain stops at Hatfield station, making OR Tambo airport and Johannesburg’s Sandton directly accessible without a car.
For visitors spending two or more nights, Hatfield is the better base: the food options are more varied and genuinely good, and the Gautrain means you’re not car-dependent for day trips.
Protea Hotel by Marriott Pretoria Loftus Park: Near Loftus Versfeld Stadium, approximately 3 km from Hatfield’s core. From approximately ZAR 1,800/night. Part of the reliable Protea/Marriott chain — consistent quality, restaurant on-site, good facilities. Solid pick for business travellers who may also need Johannesburg access.
African Pride Irene Country Lodge (Centurion, 20 km south): Technically outside Pretoria but included as a luxury alternative that divides the distance between Pretoria and Johannesburg. Country lodge setting with pool, spa, excellent breakfast. From approximately ZAR 2,800/night. Worth considering if you’re splitting a trip between both cities.
Who Hatfield suits: Visitors who want a social base, food-oriented travellers, anyone using the Gautrain for Johannesburg day trips. Good for jacaranda season when you want to walk the university streets under the trees in the morning.
Menlyn — Families, Longer Stays, Car-Based Visitors
Hotels from ZAR 900 to ZAR 1,600 per night
Menlyn is Pretoria’s eastern retail and office hub, built around Menlyn Park Shopping Centre — one of the largest malls in Africa. It’s car-dependent and less characterful than Arcadia or Hatfield, but it suits families or visitors on longer stays who want easy grocery access, a reliable neighbourhood feel, and generally better value for money.
Menlyn Boutique Hotel: Small, well-run boutique property adjacent to Menlyn Park. From approximately ZAR 1,200/night. Good value — rooms are generous for the price, the service is attentive, and the mall is a 5-minute walk. Most Pretoria attractions are a 15–25 minute Uber away.
Who Menlyn suits: Families, visitors on longer stays, anyone arriving with a rental car who prefers a quieter residential-commercial base. Not suited to first-time visitors who want to walk to monuments.
CBD — Budget Options, Daytime Only
Pretoria’s inner CBD has improved significantly around Church Square and along Paul Kruger Street, but it is not a residential neighbourhood we recommend for visitors as a primary base. There are budget-priced guesthouses and backpacker options scattered through the area, but walkability at night is limited and the surrounding streets require awareness.
If budget is the primary constraint, look at the Hatfield backpacker options (the area has a few well-run guesthouses from ZAR 600–900) rather than the CBD fringe.
Getting Around From Your Base
All major Pretoria sights — Union Buildings, Voortrekker Monument, Freedom Park, National Botanical Garden — are spread across different parts of the city. Plan on Uber or Bolt for point-to-point trips regardless of where you’re based. Budget approximately ZAR 40–80 per trip within the city.
From Arcadia: Union Buildings walk (10 min). Freedom Park Uber (15 min). Voortrekker Monument Uber (15 min). Hatfield restaurants Uber (10 min).
From Hatfield: Gautrain to Johannesburg Sandton (35–40 min, ZAR 95). Union Buildings Uber (15 min). Voortrekker Monument Uber (20 min).
OR Tambo International Airport is approximately 50 km from central Pretoria — allow 50–60 minutes by Uber (ZAR 350–450) depending on traffic on the N1/N14.
