CemAir Launches Direct George–Hoedspruit Route from 17 May 2026
South Africa gains a useful new domestic link on 17 May 2026 when CemAir begins flying between George Airport (GRJ) on the Garden Route and Hoedspruit Airport (HDS) in the Limpopo Lowveld — the gateway to Kruger National Park.
The service runs three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, with an eastbound departure from George in the morning and Flight 971 returning westbound from Hoedspruit at 12:40, landing in George at 15:05. Total flight time is approximately two hours and 15 minutes each way.
Why this route matters
Until now, combining the Garden Route with a Kruger safari almost always meant routing through Johannesburg — adding hours, an often unnecessary connection, and additional cost to what is, geographically, a manageable journey. CemAir’s new link removes that friction entirely.
Fares start from R4,800 per person and include complimentary checked baggage and onboard catering, consistent with the carrier’s full-service model. CemAir has confirmed it will increase frequency as demand grows.
Planning the combination
The Garden Route–Kruger circuit has become one of South Africa’s most popular multi-destination itineraries. Travellers typically spend four to seven nights in the Lowveld — Hoedspruit sits alongside both Greater Kruger and several private reserves — before heading south to the forests, lagoons and coastline of the Garden Route.
Previously the options were a roughly 12-hour drive or a connection via OR Tambo. The new CemAir route makes the pairing viable for visitors working within tighter schedules.
Hoedspruit is also the base for the Blyde River Canyon and a cluster of conservation projects, giving the route value beyond pure safari access.
