KwaZulu-Natal coastline with lush greenery and the Indian Ocean

South Africa’s first Club Med property — and the most expensive resort ever built in the country — is set to open on 4 July 2026 on KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast, with a phased soft launch planned in the weeks before the official date.

Construction of the 54,000 square metre complex was formally completed at a ceremony on 3 May, and the R2 billion-plus development has already created more than 2,300 direct and indirect jobs. The resort sits at Tinley Manor, roughly 20 minutes from Durban’s King Shaka International Airport and a short drive from Ballito.

A dual-location concept

The resort offers more than 400 rooms and suites across two distinct settings. The beachfront side fronts the Indian Ocean at Tinley Manor and will house what is set to become the first Club Med Surf School in the world. The safari side sits within the Vikela Private Game Reserve — an 18,000-hectare conservancy in northern KwaZulu-Natal — placing guests within a Big Five environment under the all-inclusive formula the brand is known for.

The combination is a first for Club Med globally. South African Tourism has cited the project as a flagship for attracting European package-holiday visitors who might otherwise opt for Mauritius or the Maldives over continental Africa.

Getting there

Domestic flights link Johannesburg, Cape Town, and other major centres to King Shaka International Airport daily, making the resort straightforward to reach as part of a broader KwaZulu-Natal trip. International arrivals have a full guide to flights into South Africa to help plan the best routing.

KZN’s dry winter season — June through August — brings warm days, clear skies, and some of the best conditions on the Dolphin Coast, making July opening timing well chosen.

Why it matters

South Africa welcomed a record 10.5 million international visitors in 2025. The Club Med opening represents the country’s largest single tourism investment in recent years and a deliberate push to broaden the accommodation offer beyond traditional safari lodges. Bookings are already open via the Club Med website for July and August dates.
