Virgin Atlantic has confirmed its most ambitious South Africa flying programme to date, announcing 21 weekly departures between London Heathrow and South Africa from October 2026 — a record for an airline that has operated in the market for nearly 30 years.

The schedule

From October 2026 through March 2027, Virgin Atlantic will operate 10 weekly flights between Heathrow and Johannesburg OR Tambo (JNB) on the Airbus A350-1000. A seasonal Cape Town service runs 11 times per week from 15 October 2026 to 20 April 2027. Together these bring the carrier to 21 weekly South Africa rotations, a step up from previous seasons.

What more seats mean in practice

Greater frequency translates to more schedule flexibility and, typically, more competitive pricing as airlines fill larger programmes. Virgin Atlantic’s Heathrow hub also gives South Africa-bound travellers strong onward connections to North America, making this route useful not only from the UK but for transatlantic routing via London.

The Cape Town operation runs deep into autumn — through 20 April — which captures one of the finest windows for visiting the Western Cape. March and April bring fewer crowds, excellent wine-harvest conditions and warm, settled weather. Our best time to visit South Africa guide has the full seasonal breakdown.

Planning around peak season

The October–February core of this schedule aligns with South Africa’s high summer: peak time for Kruger safaris, Garden Route road trips and Cape Town beach holidays. This is when demand is strongest, and it is precisely what prompted Virgin Atlantic to scale up capacity. Book well in advance for this window.
