Air Europa will begin flying between Madrid and Johannesburg on 24 June 2026, adding Spain to the short list of European countries with a nonstop South Africa connection and opening a natural gateway for travellers coming from Latin America.

The route in detail

Services depart Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 15:05, arriving at O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg. Return flights leave Johannesburg on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 03:10, touching down in Madrid at 13:20. All services are operated by Boeing 787 Dreamliners with a published capacity of approximately 294 seats across business and economy cabins. Fares are already on sale via Air Europa’s website and connecting travel agents.

The new route completes Air Europa’s 2026 Africa push, which also includes the resumption of Madrid–Marrakech and Madrid–Tunis services. Together the three routes position the carrier as a meaningful alternative to established South Africa gateways in Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and London.

What it means for connecting travel

Air Europa is a member of the SkyTeam alliance, which means Johannesburg now connects to a wider range of European, North American and Latin American cities through Madrid’s hub. Travellers from South America — where Air Europa operates a dense network — gain the most direct benefit, as the Madrid connection puts Buenos Aires, Lima, Bogotá and São Paulo within a single-alliance itinerary away from Johannesburg.

For South African travellers, the new Madrid link opens clean connections to the Iberian Peninsula and through it to Air Europa’s Canary Islands network — islands that are among the most popular winter destinations for South African passport holders.

The broader 2026 flight picture

The Air Europa launch is one of several significant new long-haul additions to South Africa’s flight network this year. LATAM Airlines is introducing São Paulo–Cape Town from September 2026, Qantas has already started Johannesburg–Perth, and Airlink is launching Johannesburg–Zanzibar in June. Lufthansa has also confirmed expanded Frankfurt–Cape Town services.

The cumulative effect is a marked improvement in non-stop connectivity from markets that previously faced long one-stop itineraries. For visitors from Spain and Portugal in particular, the Air Europa route removes the need to transit through a northern European hub for the first time.

Booking and entry requirements

Seats are bookable now for travel from 24 June. Given that South Africa’s tourism season peaks between October and April, the June launch allows travellers to book winter-season itineraries well in advance. Entry requirements for South Africa continue to evolve — the country’s Electronic Travel Authorisation system has expanded to include nationals of China, India, Indonesia and Mexico arriving at three major airports, with further rollout to land border crossings expected later in 2026. Full current entry rules are on our visa requirements page.
