Knysna Heads with turquoise water and rocky cliffs — Garden Route, South Africa

The Garden Route is best explored by car — driving the N2 between Mossel Bay and Storms River, dipping south to the coast at each town. Where you base yourself depends on which part of the route matters most: Knysna is the most popular hub, Plettenberg Bay is the most upscale, and Storms River is the base for Tsitsikamma activities. You don’t need to move every night — two or three bases covering three or four nights each gives you time to settle in.

How to Travel the Garden Route

Most visitors self-drive the N2 from Cape Town or from George Airport (which has regular Airlink and FlySafair connections from Cape Town and Johannesburg). The route from Cape Town to Storms River is approximately 650 kilometres and takes 6–7 hours without stops — realistically 2–3 days of driving with activities.

Hire a car in Cape Town or at George Airport. George is the most practical entry point if you want to start mid-route. Expect approximately ZAR 400–700 per day for a small automatic hire car as of 2026.

Mossel Bay (Gateway Town)

Mossel Bay marks the western end of the Garden Route. The town is pleasant but not a destination in itself — the main reason to stop is the Bartolomeu Dias Museum and the Point, and the proximity to Gouritsmond for shark cage diving.

Where to stay: The Protea Hotel Mossel Bay sits on the waterfront and is the most reliable option in town. Rates from approximately ZAR 900–1,600 per night as of 2026. Self-catering options in the residential suburbs from approximately ZAR 600–900 per night.

George (Airport Hub)

George is the largest town on the Garden Route and serves primarily as a transport hub — the airport is here, along with good supermarkets and car hire offices. The town itself has limited tourist appeal but is useful for stocking up before heading east.

Where to stay: Several B&Bs and guesthouses in the George area from approximately ZAR 700–1,200 per night. The Holiday Inn Express George is the most reliable chain option (approximately ZAR 900–1,500 per night as of 2026).

Wilderness

Wilderness is a small, laid-back town between George and Knysna where a river meets the sea in a wide lagoon, surrounded by the Outeniqua Mountains. It is quieter than Knysna and has a community of artists and permanent residents who value its pace. Good beaches at the Wilderness Beach stretch.

Wilderness Hotel (main property in town): A sprawling resort-style hotel with direct lagoon access, chalets and rooms from approximately ZAR 1,200–2,200 per night as of 2026. The location at the lagoon mouth is striking; facilities include pools and a restaurant.

The Charles Guesthouse: A smaller, more personal guesthouse option in Wilderness, from approximately ZAR 900–1,500 per night as of 2026.

Wilderness is a good base if you want to avoid the crowds of Knysna while still being central to the route.

Knysna

Knysna is the most popular town on the Garden Route and for good reason — the famous Heads (twin sandstone cliffs flanking the lagoon mouth), the lagoon, the surrounding Knysna Forest, the central waterfront precinct and a range of eating options make it the best all-round base on the route. The town can feel busy in December–January; the shoulder season (April–May and September–November) is far more pleasant.

Turbine Boutique Hotel & Spa Converted from the old Knysna power station on the waterfront, the Turbine is the most distinctive hotel in town. Industrial-chic design, a highly regarded restaurant, and a central location. Rates from approximately ZAR 2,000–3,500 per night as of 2026.

Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa Set on the heights above the lagoon and the Heads, Pezula is the most upscale option in Knysna — a large estate hotel with golf course, spa, and sweeping lagoon views. Rates from approximately ZAR 5,000–8,000 per night as of 2026.

Knysna Log-Inn Hotel A mid-range option in the centre of Knysna — functional, friendly, and well-placed for the waterfront restaurants. Rates from approximately ZAR 1,200–2,000 per night as of 2026.

Lightley’s Houseboats An entirely different experience: hiring a self-catering houseboat to moor on the lagoon. This is Knysna at its most atmospheric — mornings with the mist over the water, evenings watching the Heads turn gold. Rates from approximately ZAR 2,500–4,500 per night for a 4-berth boat as of 2026. Book well ahead.

Plettenberg Bay

Plettenberg Bay — “Plett” — is the most upscale resort town on the Garden Route. Long white beaches, a large whale-watching and dolphin-spotting industry, and several of the best hotels on the route make it a destination in its own right rather than just a stopover.

The Marine Plettenberg Bay The best-positioned hotel in Plett — perched on the headland with views of the bay in both directions. Cliffside rooms look directly over the ocean. Rates from approximately ZAR 2,500–5,000 per night as of 2026.

Emily Moon River Lodge Set on a river bluff above the Bitou River, a short drive from the beach. The design is atmospheric — A-frame chalets, a lagoon-facing restaurant, and a tropical garden that feels a world away from the busier coastal towns. Rates from approximately ZAR 3,000–5,500 per night as of 2026.

Hunters Country House A country-house hotel in the inland fynbos, about 7 km from the Plett town centre. Less beach-focused, more retreat-oriented. Rates from approximately ZAR 2,200–3,500 per night as of 2026 (all-inclusive meals).

Budget options: Plettenberg Bay has fewer budget options than Knysna but several guesthouses in the residential areas offer B&B from approximately ZAR 800–1,400 per night as of 2026.

Storms River (Tsitsikamma Gateway)

Storms River Village is a small community at the eastern end of the Garden Route, serving as the main base for the Tsitsikamma National Park — suspension bridges over forest gorges, cliff-hugging hiking trails, kayaking and bungee jumping at Bloukrans Bridge (the world’s highest commercial bungee, approximately ZAR 1,050 as of 2026).

Tsitsikamma Lodge & Spa The main lodge in Storms River Village — a collection of forest chalets spread through an indigenous garden, with a restaurant and spa. Well-run and atmospheric. Rates from approximately ZAR 1,400–2,500 per night as of 2026.

Misty Mountain Reserve On the plateau above Storms River, Misty Mountain offers self-catering cabins in the forest. More remote and quiet than the village lodges, with a treetop walk. Rates from approximately ZAR 1,200–2,000 per night as of 2026.

Budget options: Several affordable guesthouses in Storms River Village from approximately ZAR 600–1,000 per night as of 2026. The Storms River Adventure hostel caters for backpackers and activity-focused travellers.

Booking Tips

Peak season (December–January and Easter): The Garden Route is the most popular domestic holiday destination in South Africa. Knysna and Plett can be very busy, prices are high, and some properties require minimum stays of 5–7 nights. Book 4–6 months ahead for December.

Best value: April–May and September–October have good weather (particularly for the Eastern section) and significantly lower prices. The whale season (June–December) makes the shoulder months excellent for marine wildlife.

Where to base if you only have 3 nights: Knysna is the best single base — central to the route, most dining options, and easy day trips in both directions.

Self-catering: The Garden Route has an excellent supply of holiday houses and cottages, particularly around Knysna and Plett. Often better value for groups of four or more than hotel rooms.
