Tsitsikamma National Park forms the eastern end of the Garden Route. It covers 80 km of rugged coastline between Plettenberg Bay and Humansdorp — rocky coves, ancient yellowwood forest, and the dramatic Storms River mouth where the river cuts through a narrow canyon before meeting the Indian Ocean.
The park’s character is different from the rest of the Garden Route. There are no towns inside the park boundary, no shops beyond the camp facilities, and no roads running along the coast. What there is: some of South Africa’s best coastal hiking, the continent’s highest commercial bungee jump 16 km west of the main gate, and a sense of wilderness that the more developed sections of the Garden Route can’t match.
For the full Garden Route road trip context, see the Garden Route complete guide.
Getting There
From Plettenberg Bay: 55 km east on the N2, approximately 45 minutes. Turn off at the Storms River Mouth/De Vasselot Camp sign — the gate is 3 km from the N2 turnoff.
From Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha): 160 km west on the N2, approximately 1.5–2 hours.
From George Airport: 200 km east, approximately 2–2.5 hours. Hire a car at George Airport to drive the Garden Route east to Tsitsikamma.
From Cape Town: 580 km east on the N2. Allow 6.5–7 hours. Most visitors reach Tsitsikamma on day 3–4 of a Garden Route road trip.
Storms River Mouth — The Main Attraction
The Storms River Mouth is the centrepiece of the park. The Storms River cuts a narrow canyon through the coastal cliffs and meets the Indian Ocean in a dramatic collision of white water, spray, and dark rock. A 77-metre suspension bridge crosses the gorge at the river mouth.
Entry fee: ZAR 204 per adult (as of 2026). Park at the Storms River Mouth Rest Camp and walk the 500 m to the bridge — it takes 5 minutes.
The 3-View Walk (40 minutes, easy)
The standard visitor experience: walk from the camp along the cliff path to the suspension bridge, cross it (the bridge bounces; the view into the gorge is dramatic), then continue east to two viewpoints overlooking the rocky coastline. Return the same way. Suitable for all fitness levels; no hiking boots required.
Timing: Morning light is better on the western (camp-side) half; afternoon light is better on the eastern viewpoints. If you arrive late afternoon, prioritize the eastern viewpoints first.
Blue Duiker Hiking Trail (3 km loop, 1–1.5 hours)
A loop trail through the yellowwood and stinkwood forest behind the camp. The Blue Duiker (a tiny antelope) is present but rarely seen. The forest itself is the attraction — old-growth yellowwood trees up to 800 years old, dense canopy, coastal fynbos in the gaps.
Woodcutters Journey (2-day guided trail, seasonal)
A guided 2-day historical walk through the forest following the routes of 19th-century woodcutters. Operates on demand — ask at the camp for current availability.
The Otter Trail
South Africa’s most famous multi-day coastal hike runs 42 km from Storms River Mouth west to Nature’s Valley over 5 days. It crosses 11 rivers (most must be waded at low tide), traverses cliff paths with dramatic ocean views, and passes through the only section of coast in South Africa inaccessible to vehicles.
Permit booking: Through SANParks at sanparks.org. Permits sell out within hours of opening — the booking window opens 11 months ahead of the start date. For popular months (December–January, July–August), set a calendar alert for the exact booking-open date.
Cost: Approximately ZAR 1,000–1,500 per person for the full 5-day trail (as of 2026), covering overnight huts and the trail permit.
Who it suits: Fit hikers comfortable with river crossings, exposed coastal terrain, and overnight huts without full facilities. The rivers are crossed by wading — in flood conditions some are serious obstacles. The trail is not technically difficult but requires reasonable fitness and navigation confidence.
Huts: 4 overnight huts along the trail (Ngubu, Scott, André, Oakhurst). Each sleeps 12. Gas cooking, cold-water showers, composting toilets. Huts are basic; bring a sleeping bag.
Direction: Most hikers walk west to east (Storms River Mouth → Nature’s Valley) to have the prevailing southwest wind behind them. Booking the shuttle back from Nature’s Valley is essential — it’s 25 km from the N2.
Bloukrans Bungee Jump
16 km west of the Storms River Mouth turnoff on the N2, the Bloukrans Bridge carries the N2 across the Bloukrans River gorge at a height of 216 m. Face Adrenalin operates the world’s highest commercial bungee jump from the underside of the bridge arch.
Cost: ZAR 1,095 per person (as of 2026). Observers can walk to the viewing bridge for ZAR 195. The video package adds ZAR 350.
What happens: You’re kitted in a full-body harness and walk out to the launch platform at the bridge’s centre. Freefall lasts approximately 4–5 seconds — 160 m of drop before the cord fires. Three or four bounces, then you’re winched to the pickup crew. Total time from jump to return: about 15 minutes.
Weight restrictions: Minimum 40 kg, maximum 150 kg. Health exclusions apply — confirm if you have joint or cardiac concerns.
Where to Stay
Inside the Park (SANParks)
Storms River Mouth Rest Camp — the only SANParks camp inside Tsitsikamma, positioned on the cliff edge above the river mouth. Log cabins and chalets facing the ocean, with the waves crashing on the rocks below. The setting is extraordinary.
| Accommodation | From |
|---|---|
| Forest Cabin (4-bed, self-catering) | ZAR 1,800/night |
| De Luxe Chalet (2-bed, sea-facing) | ZAR 2,400/night |
| Camping (riverside) | ZAR 350/site |
| Rondawel (2-bed, forest-facing) | ZAR 1,200/night |
Book through SANParks at sanparks.org — minimum 3–4 months ahead for dry season (May–September), 6+ months for school holidays. Sea-facing chalets are the most sought-after units in the Garden Route park system.
Outside the Park
Tsitsikamma Village Inn — in Storms River village, 4 km outside the park gate. 56 rooms, a good restaurant, lush garden. ZAR 1,200–1,800 per room. More economical than the park chalets, less spectacular in setting.
Tube ‘n Axe Backpackers — popular budget option in the village. ZAR 300–400 dorm, ZAR 900 private. Organizes adventure activities from the property.
Storms River Adventures B&B — adjacent to the adventure operators. Convenient for bungee and zip-line activities.
Other Activities
Zip-line (Face Adrenalin): ZAR 500–700 for zip-line and quad biking packages at the Bloukrans site. A useful alternative if bungee is too much.
Sea kayaking in the gorge: Several operators run guided kayak tours into the Storms River gorge from the mouth. The gorge is navigable by sea kayak at low swell; guides assess conditions on the day. Approximately ZAR 450–600 per person.
Horse riding: Storms River Village Equestrian offers guided horse rides through the forest (ZAR 400–600 per person, 1–2 hours).
