Where to Stay in Johannesburg: Best Areas & Hotels 2026
Johannesburg’s accommodation is spread across a large urban area, and where you stay determines what kind of city experience you have. The main tourist areas — Sandton, Rosebank and Maboneng — are quite different in character, and the safety profile of each affects what you can do on foot. This guide covers the practicalities honestly.
Understanding Johannesburg’s Neighbourhoods
Sandton: The safest and most convenient base for most visitors. Sandton is Joburg’s financial district — high-rise hotels, the Gautrain station with direct connections to OR Tambo Airport (15 minutes, approximately ZAR 180 as of 2026), and Sandton City mall with its restaurants and shops. The area is walkable within a few blocks of Nelson Mandela Square during daylight hours. Sandton is not exciting in the way that Maboneng or Rosebank are, but for reliability and security it is the best option.
Rosebank: A quieter, more relaxed alternative to Sandton — also on the Gautrain line (one stop from Sandton), with a walkable concentration of restaurants, galleries and the Zone shopping centre. Rosebank has a better street life than Sandton and a more diverse mix of visitors and residents. Day-time walking feels more natural here; after dark, take an Uber.
Maboneng: Joburg’s most talked-about creative neighbourhood — a regenerated industrial area in the eastern inner city with galleries, design studios, weekend markets and a growing restaurant scene. The Sunday Arts on Main market is worth the trip. Maboneng is not for all visitors — it requires a degree of urban awareness, and some blocks adjacent to the main streets feel less settled. Most visitors base themselves in Sandton or Rosebank and take an Uber to Maboneng for the market or dinner rather than staying here.
Melville: A bohemian residential suburb with Joburg’s most relaxed restaurant street (7th Street). Predominantly arts and media crowd. Not on the Gautrain; you’ll need an Uber. Quieter hotels and guesthouses rather than large chains.
OR Tambo area (Kempton Park): If you have an early morning flight and nothing else to do in Joburg, airport hotels make sense. These serve transit purposes only — there is nothing to see or do in this area.
Safety Notes by Area
We address safety directly because it shapes accommodation decisions in Johannesburg more than in any other South African city.
- Sandton: Very safe by Joburg standards — walking around the immediate Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square area is fine day and night within that footprint. Beyond a few blocks, take an Uber after dark.
- Rosebank: Generally safe during daylight, particularly around the Zone and the Rosebank Mall strip. Standard Uber-after-dark advice applies.
- Maboneng: Best visited during the day and early evening, with a group. The main Arts on Main street is generally fine; adjacent streets warrant more awareness.
- Melville 7th Street: Relaxed during the day; the restaurant strip is busy and relatively safe on weekend evenings.
- Inner city CBD: Avoid as an accommodation base unless you know the city well.
Budget Accommodation (ZAR 400–800/night)
Curiocity Backpackers Maboneng The best backpacker in Johannesburg, located in the Maboneng Precinct with direct access to the Arts on Main market and the creative neighbourhood. Dorm beds from approximately ZAR 400–600 per night; private rooms from approximately ZAR 600–900 per night as of 2026. Staff organise daily tours including Soweto, the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill. The social atmosphere and tour connections make this an excellent base despite the Maboneng location caveats.
Mid-Range Accommodation (ZAR 1,200–2,500/night)
Park Hyatt Rosebank The Park Hyatt Rosebank is the best mid-to-upper hotel in the Rosebank area — a large property with a pool, multiple restaurants, and a direct footpath connection to the Zone shopping centre and the Gautrain station. Rooms are consistently well-maintained and the service is reliable. Rates from approximately ZAR 1,500–2,500 per night as of 2026, depending on season and demand.
Protea Hotel by Marriott Wanderers A dependable Marriott Bonvoy mid-range property in the Illovo/Wanderers area — close to the Sandton business district and with reliable security and facilities. Popular with business travellers and those wanting proximity to the northern suburbs. Rates from approximately ZAR 1,200–2,000 per night as of 2026.
African Pride Melrose Arch Autograph Collection Located in the upscale Melrose Arch development — an enclosed lifestyle precinct with restaurants, a hotel and apartments. Very safe within the development; good for those who want a pedestrian environment. Rates from approximately ZAR 2,000–3,000 per night as of 2026.
Luxury Accommodation (ZAR 3,500+/night)
Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa One of Joburg’s most distinctive properties — a genuine anomaly in this city. Set in a leafy Sandhurst suburb within secure grounds, Fairlawns is eccentric and opulent, with an individually decorated collection of suites, a spa, and a kitchen garden feeding the restaurant. Nothing about it feels like a chain hotel. Rates from approximately ZAR 3,500 per night as of 2026.
The Maslow Hotel Sandton A business-focused luxury hotel in Sandton, designed around work as much as leisure — a good choice if you’re mixing business with travel. The rooftop pool and views of the Sandton skyline are a highlight. Rates from approximately ZAR 3,000–4,500 per night as of 2026.
The Capsule A small, design-led boutique hotel in Rosebank with limited rooms and a high level of attention to detail. Architecture and design are taken seriously here. Rates from approximately ZAR 4,000+ per night as of 2026.
Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa Set in a quiet Sandhurst suburb, the Saxon is where Nelson Mandela stayed while completing Long Walk to Freedom — the manuscript is housed here. 53 suites in a large garden property with a spa and exceptional service. Rates from approximately ZAR 5,000+ per night as of 2026.
Getting to and from OR Tambo Airport
OR Tambo International Airport is in Kempton Park, about 25 kilometres from Sandton.
- Gautrain: The fastest and most reliable option — 15 minutes to Sandton station, approximately ZAR 180 as of 2026. Trains run from approximately 5:30am to 9:30pm weekdays, shorter hours on weekends.
- Uber: Approximately ZAR 250–350 from OR Tambo to Sandton, depending on time of day and demand. Reliable.
- Hotel transfers: Most upscale hotels offer private transfers at a premium — useful if arriving late at night.
Avoid unofficial taxis at the airport — use the designated Gautrain or Uber pickup points.
Booking Tips
Avoid December–January if budget is a concern — business hotels in Sandton drop their rates significantly as corporates shut down; however, leisure demand from domestic travellers partially offsets this.
Best value months: February–March and August–September, when business demand eases and weather is pleasant.
Security at hotels: Most Sandton and Rosebank hotels have robust security — guarded parking, reception-controlled access and 24-hour security staff. In-room safes are standard. Always keep valuables locked away.
