South Africa has the highest concentration of rated luxury safari lodges on the continent. The Sabi Sand Game Reserve alone holds more lodges on the CondΓ© Nast Traveller and Tatler gold lists than entire countries elsewhere in Africa. The combination of an excellent road network, international airport connections into Johannesburg and Cape Town, and a Big Five ecosystem that is mature, well-managed, and accessible is the reason.
This guide covers the reserves by tier β where they are, what they cost, and which lodges represent the best of each area.
Malaria note: Kruger National Park and all adjacent private reserves (Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Klaserie, Thornybush, MalaMala) fall within a malaria zone. Risk peaks OctoberβMay. Take appropriate prophylaxis and consult a travel health clinic. For malaria-free alternatives, Madikwe and Waterberg (Limpopo) are the main options.
Sabi Sand Game Reserve β the benchmark
Sabi Sand is where the concept of the modern luxury African safari lodge was essentially invented. It shares an unfenced 65,000-hectare boundary with southern Kruger. Animals β including lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and wild dog β move freely across the combined ecosystem.
The defining quality of Sabi Sand is leopard habituation. Guides have tracked individual animals and their offspring for decades. Sightings are close, frequent, and photographable in a way that is genuinely difficult to replicate elsewhere.
Top lodges in Sabi Sand:
- Singita Sabi Sand β Boulders and Ebony camps. R25,000βR50,000+ per person per night sharing. Singita operates a private 7,500-hectare concession within Sabi Sand meaning fewer vehicles at sightings. The food, wine cellar, and guiding standards are consistently rated among the best in Africa.
- MalaMala Main Camp β The oldest private safari lodge in South Africa, operating since 1964. 13,000 hectares exclusive concession. R15,000βR35,000 per person per night. No fences, historical Big Five track record, private airstrip.
- Londolozi Tree Camp and Private Deck Camp β R18,000βR45,000+ per person per night. Londolozi has been hosting leopard sightings since the 1970s and was instrumental in demonstrating the conservation value of private reserves. Tree Camp (six tree suites above the Sand River) is the flagship.
- &Beyond Ngala Safari Lodge and Tented Camp β R12,000βR25,000 per person per night. One of the most accessible five-star options in the reserve. The tented camp is slightly more affordable and offers a more traditional canvas feel.
- Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge β Architecturally distinctive underground lodge. R10,000βR22,000 per person per night. The design sits below the bush surface to minimise visual impact β unusual even in the luxury market.

Timbavati Private Nature Reserve
Timbavati shares its western boundary with central Kruger. The reserve covers approximately 53,000 hectares and is best known for its white lions β a genetic variant that has occurred in this bloodline for centuries. The white lions are not albino; they carry a recessive gene specific to the TimbavatiβKruger corridor.
Guiding quality in Timbavati is comparable to Sabi Sand. The main distinction is that Sabi Sand has a longer track record with leopard habituation β Timbavati is slightly less consistent for leopard but equivalent for lion and elephant.
Top lodges in Timbavati:
- Kings Camp β R6,000βR12,000 per person per night. One of the most consistently rated mid-to-upper lodges in the reserve. 12 suites, private plunge pools, strong guides.
- Motswari Private Game Reserve β R5,500βR9,000 per person per night. Slightly more affordable than Kings Camp with comparable guiding. Good family rooms.
- Tanda Tula Safari Camp β R8,000βR14,000 per person per night. Tented camp, 12 units, situated on the Nhlaralumi River. Long-established β one of the original Timbavati lodges.
- Umlani Bushcamp β R3,000βR5,500 per person per night. The most affordable option in the reserve. Canvas tents, bucket showers, genuine bush feel β deliberately low-impact. Strong community ownership model.
Madikwe Game Reserve β malaria-free Big Five
Madikwe in the North West Province, on the Botswana border, is the fourth-largest game reserve in South Africa at 75,000 hectares. It is the best malaria-free alternative to the Kruger ecosystem for travellers who cannot or prefer not to take antimalarials.
The reserve was established in 1991 through Operation Phoenix β one of the largest wildlife translocation projects in history β relocating 8,000 animals from 26 species. Wild dog have established breeding packs, which makes Madikwe one of the most reliable reserves in the country for wild dog sightings alongside Big Five.
Top lodges in Madikwe:
- Jaciβs Safari Lodge β R7,000βR14,000 per person per night. Family-friendly, treehouse units over the Marico River, strong wild dog sighting record.
- Tau Game Lodge β R4,500βR8,000 per person per night. One of the larger lodges in Madikwe, community-owned, good value at the upper-mid tier.
- Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge β R5,000βR9,000 per person per night. Community-equity lodge with elevated viewing decks facing an active waterhole. Consistent animal activity at the lodge itself.
- Molori Safari Lodge β R18,000βR40,000 per person per night. The benchmark luxury option in Madikwe β five exclusive suites, private vehicle for each room, exceptional food and wine programme.

Private reserves on Krugerβs western boundary
Beyond Sabi Sand and Timbavati, several other private reserves adjoin Krugerβs western fence. These are generally more affordable and offer a more independent feel β smaller lodges with fewer guests and less brand recognition, but genuine Big Five game.
Klaserie Private Nature Reserve: 60,000 hectares adjacent to central Kruger. Home to lodges such as Umlani Bushcamp (also operating in Timbavati), River Lodge Klaserie (R4,500βR7,500), and Nottenβs Bush Camp (R3,500βR6,500).
Balule Nature Reserve: Borders central Kruger and Klaserie. More affordable than Sabi Sand β lodges here start from R2,500 per person per night. Olifants River Lodge and Marula Bush House are two well-reviewed options in this bracket.
Thornybush Game Reserve: Shares Timbavatiβs southern boundary. Thornybush Collection lodges (Thornybush Game Lodge, River Lodge, Waterside) run R5,000βR12,000 per person per night.
MalaMala: Technically its own 13,000-hectare private concession rather than a shared reserve, but sits on Krugerβs south-western boundary and is worth listing separately. No other vehicles share sightings on the concession β all game drives are exclusive to MalaMala guests.
Addo and the Eastern Cape
Addo Elephant National Park and the surrounding private reserves offer a malaria-free Big Five experience in the Eastern Cape. The landscape β fynbos, thicket, and karoo β is distinct from the bushveld feel of the north.
Notable lodges:
- Gorah Elephant Camp β R12,000βR22,000 per person per night. Colonial-style tented lodge inside the park boundaries. Elephant are regularly at or near the camp.
- Shamwari Private Game Reserve β R8,000βR18,000 per person per night. Six camps, Big Five, conservation focus. Eagles Crag and Lobengula are the flagship lodges. Born Free Foundation partnership.
- Kwandwe Private Game Reserve β R12,000βR24,000 per person per night. Malaria-free, Big Five, four lodges on 22,000 hectares. The Ecca Lodge (6 units) and Great Fish River Lodge (9 units) are the main options.

Planning your stay
Most lodges require a minimum two-night stay. Three nights is the standard recommendation β this gives six game drives and a realistic chance at Big Five sightings without the rushed feel of a one-night stopover.
Fly-in safari from Johannesburg to Sabi Sand, Timbavati, or Madikwe is the fastest option β charter flights from Lanseria or OR Tambo to the private airstrips run approximately R3,500βR6,000 per person one-way. Self-drive to Timbavati or the Klaserie reserves is feasible; Sabi Sand requires a 4-hour drive from Johannesburg to the Sabi Sand gate.
