5 Days in Kruger National Park — Safari Itinerary for First-Timers
Five days in Kruger is enough for a genuinely rewarding safari — you’ll see the Big Five if you’re methodical about it, experience the particular atmosphere of the African bush, and understand why people come back to this park repeatedly.
This itinerary focuses on the southern and central Kruger, which has the highest game density and the most reliable Big Five sightings. The park covers 20,000 km² — you could spend months in it.
Getting There
By air: Fly from Cape Town or Johannesburg to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA), 20 minutes from Hazyview (near Numbi and Paul Kruger Gates). Airlink operates this route. Pick up a hire car at the airport.
By car from Johannesburg: 4–5 hours on the N12/N4 to Numbi Gate. This works if you’re arriving in Joburg anyway.
Hire car: Standard hire car is fine for Kruger’s tarred and gravel roads. No 4x4 needed unless you’re going on private bush tracks. Book ahead through Avis, Budget, or Europcar.
Park entry fees: R440 per adult per day + R204 vehicle fee. Buy at the gate. Book rest camps through the SANParks website — book months ahead for peak season (June–September).
Day 1: Arrive and Enter the Park
Gate: Paul Kruger Gate (the most central, nearest to Skukuza).
Arrive at the gate by no later than 14:00 to allow an afternoon drive. Check in to Skukuza Rest Camp (the park’s main camp — restaurant, shop, pool, filling station). Have lunch, then drive.
Afternoon drive (14:30–gate closing at 18:30): Drive the H1-1 (the main tar road from Paul Kruger Gate toward Satara). For the first afternoon, concentrate on a stretch of 30–40 km. Stop at Nkumbe viewpoint if you’re heading south (panoramic views over the Sabie River valley).
For the Sabie River area: drive the H4-1 eastward from Paul Kruger Gate — this river road has consistently good game, particularly elephant, hippo, and crocodile at the water’s edge.
Back at camp before gate closing. Braai at camp or eat at the Skukuza restaurant.
Day 2: Southern Kruger — Lion Country
Depart: At gate opening (30 minutes before sunrise). Pack breakfast from the camp shop the night before.
Route: Drive south from Skukuza on the H3/S25/S90 loop toward Crocodile Bridge. The S-roads (unpaved sand roads) have better game viewing but slower driving.
H4-2 between Lower Sabie and Crocodile Bridge is the most productive lion road in the southern park. Wide open grassland, multiple prides. Drive slowly, look carefully at drainage lines and shade trees. Pull over for 10–15 minutes at any water point you encounter.
Crocodile Bridge Gate area in the morning: large buffalo herds are common. Buffalo indicate lions are nearby.
Lower Sabie (82 km from Skukuza, 1.5 hours) — stop here for tea or breakfast. The camp is positioned on the Sabie River with excellent birding. A waterhole 2 km west of the camp (Sunset Dam) regularly has elephant, hippo, and crocs.
Return to Skukuza via the H10 (south bank of the Sabie River road) — another productive road for leopard and general game.
Day 3: Move Camp to Satara
Morning drive: Depart Skukuza early, drive north on the H1-1 toward Satara. This is a full 90-km drive — allow 3–4 hours with stops.
Notable stops north of Skukuza:
- Tshokwane Picnic Site (52 km north of Skukuza): mandatory coffee stop, shaded, hippos in the river below
- Nkuhlu Picnic Site (river access, elephant frequently come to drink)
- The road between Tshokwane and Satara: open plains, cheetah country
Check in to Satara Rest Camp by midday. Satara is the lion capital of Kruger — large prides are frequently found in the vicinity.
Afternoon: Drive the H6/H7 loop east of Satara toward the Mozambique border (N’wanetsi and Sweni rivers). This eastern section has excellent lion, buffalo, and cheetah.
Day 4: Olifants and the Central Park
Full day from Satara, day-tripping north to Olifants Rest Camp (50 km north).
Olifants sits on a cliff above the Olifants River — the best panoramic view in the park. Breakfast at the camp restaurant with the river below.
Morning drive from Satara to Olifants (H1-4): Open plains, koppies (rocky outcrops), good for lion. The river crossings at the Olifants River bridge are excellent for elephant and hippo.
From Olifants, the H8 loop goes to Balule Camp (one of Kruger’s smallest, simplest bush camps). Drive this loop for elephant, giraffe, and lion in the thicker mopane bush.
Return to Satara by mid-afternoon. Afternoon game drive south of Satara on the S100 (sand road, good for leopard in the thorn trees).
Day 5: Final Morning Drive and Departure
Depart: Gate opening (before sunrise).
Choose your exit: If leaving via Paul Kruger Gate, drive the H1-1 south from Satara through Tshokwane to Skukuza (90 km) — this is your best final game viewing road.
Morning hours in Kruger are reliably the most productive. Look for activity around river crossings and drainage lines. Animals that were active overnight are often still visible in the early morning.
Exit through Paul Kruger Gate and drive to KMIA airport (about 2 hours from Skukuza). Return hire car and fly.
Packing List for Kruger
- Khaki, green, or brown clothing (not white or bright colours — they scare game)
- Long-sleeved shirts and trousers for evenings (mosquito protection)
- Binoculars — essential. A 10x42 pair is the standard.
- Camera with a zoom lens (minimum 300mm equivalent for wildlife at distance)
- DEET repellent (Tabard or OFF DEET spray — available at camp shops)
- Malaria prophylaxis (started before arrival)
- Sunscreen (UV is intense even in winter)
- Torch/headlamp (nights are dark and rest camps spread out)
- Warm layer for early mornings in winter (can be below 5°C at 05:30)

Rest Camp Booking Tips
Book through the SANParks online reservation system (sanparks.org). The system opens bookings 11 months in advance — popular camps in peak season (June–August) fill up within hours of opening. If you’re travelling in peak season:
- Set an alarm for the exact moment your booking window opens (11 months ahead)
- Have your SANParks card number ready
- Know exactly which nights you want and which camps
- Book accommodation at Lower Sabie months ahead if you can — it has the best river position and consistently excellent game
If you miss the primary booking window, check the SANParks cancellation list regularly — spots do come free.
