Mpumalanga and Kruger Travel Guide — Safari, Panorama Route, and Blyde River Canyon
Mpumalanga is South Africa's safari heartland — gateway to Kruger National Park, the Panorama Route, and the Blyde River Canyon.
Mpumalanga province is South Africa’s safari country. Kruger National Park covers most of the eastern border — nearly 20,000 km² of savanna, riverine forest, and bushveld. To the west, the Drakensberg escarpment drops dramatically from the Highveld plateau to the Lowveld, creating the extraordinary landscape of the Panorama Route.
Most visitors come for Kruger. Many add the Panorama Route on the way in or out. A week in the region is enough for a good safari and the scenic highlights; two weeks allows a more thorough Kruger exploration. For the full itinerary breakdown, see the 5-day Kruger safari guide or the 14-day South Africa itinerary.
Malaria note: The entire Kruger and Lowveld region is a malaria zone. Take prescription prophylaxis before entering. Full detail in the health and vaccinations guide.
Kruger National Park
Kruger is Africa’s most accessible Big Five safari. You can self-drive in a standard hire car, stay in SANParks rest camps inside the park, and see lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, rhino, cheetah, wild dog, and hundreds of bird species without a guide. No other park on the continent offers this combination of wildlife density, accessibility, and affordability.
Entry Costs and Booking (2025/26)
| Fee | International visitor rate |

| Vehicle entry | R204 per vehicle |
| Rest camp booking | Via sanparks.org (opens 11 months ahead) |
| Private lodge (Sabi Sand, Timbavati) | R8,000–30,000+ per person per night |
Book SANParks camps through the official reservation system at sanparks.org. Popular camps — particularly Lower Sabie riverside chalets and Satara — sell out months ahead, especially for peak dry season (June–August).
Main Entry Gates
| Gate | Best for | Nearest camps |
|---|---|---|
| Numbi Gate | Southern Kruger, coming from White River | Pretoriuskop, Skukuza |
| Paul Kruger Gate | Central access, Skukuza | Skukuza (HQ rest camp) |
| Malelane Gate | Far southern Kruger | Berg-en-Dal |
| Crocodile Bridge Gate | Southern tip, lion country | Crocodile Bridge Camp |
| Orpen Gate | Central Kruger, Satara region | Satara |
| Phalaborwa Gate | Northern Kruger (Limpopo province) | Letaba, Mopani |
Wildlife and Where to Find It
Southern Kruger (Skukuza to Crocodile Bridge): Most productive zone for lion and leopard. The rivers — Sabie, Crocodile — attract concentrations of hippo, crocodile, elephant, and are productive for sightings year-round. Lower Sabie camp sits on the Sabie River: book a riverside chalet if possible.
Central Kruger (Satara region): Large lion prides and the highest density of zebra and wildebeest in the park. The open plains around Satara are the most reliable big cat terrain in Kruger.
Northern Kruger (Letaba to Punda Maria): Much quieter, fewer tourists, excellent for elephant (the Mashikiri waterhole near Letaba is famous for them), eland, and rarer antelope like nyala and tsessebe. Fewer lion but a wilder experience.
Rest Camps: Costs and Character
| Camp | Area | Accommodation from | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skukuza | South | R800/night | Largest camp, full facilities, bank, restaurant, shop |
| Lower Sabie | South | R1,200/night | Best location — on the Sabie River; book riverside chalets early |
| Berg-en-Dal | South | R900/night | Modern, shaded by jackalberry trees; good for rhino |
| Satara | Central | R1,000/night | Best for lion; large camp on open plains |
| Orpen | Central | R700/night | Smaller, less busy, good value |
| Letaba | North | R800/night | Elephant museum, good elephant sightings |
| Olifants | North | R900/night | Spectacular river-canyon setting |
| Punda Maria | Far north | R700/night | Quietest camp; excellent birding |
Prices are for basic 2-bed chalets. Larger family cottages and safari tents cost more. All camps have a camp kitchen and braai (BBQ) facility; Skukuza, Satara, and Lower Sabie have restaurants.
Self-Drive Tips
- Drive at 25 km/h or less and stop frequently — animals appear suddenly.
- Early morning (gates open 30 minutes before sunrise) and late afternoon (2 hours before gate closing) give the best sightings. Lions are most active at these times.
- Never exit your car except at designated picnic sites, camps, or rest stops.
- Don’t crowd or approach animals — elephant can charge; rhino can move very fast.
- Carry water, snacks, and a full tank of petrol. The park is large and fuel is only at main camps.
For the detailed day-by-day self-drive guide, see the Kruger safari activity page.
Private Game Reserves
The western border of Kruger is unfenced and adjoins private reserves — Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Thornybush, and Klaserie — where all-inclusive luxury lodges operate. These offer the finest safari experience available:
- Open 4x4 vehicles with professional guide and tracker who communicate with each other by radio to locate animals
- Off-road driving to approach animals across open terrain (not possible in national park)
- Night drives (illegal in national park) — leopard, nightjar, hyena, civets, lion hunting
- Walking safaris with an armed ranger — reading tracks, close encounter with smaller wildlife
- No other vehicles competing for viewings — exclusivity on sightings
| Lodge | Reserve | Category | Rate per person per night | Notable for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MalaMala Main Camp | MalaMala | Luxury | R18,000–22,000 | Oldest private reserve bordering Kruger; massive sightings record |
| Londolozi Tree Camp | Sabi Sand | Ultra-luxury | R18,000–25,000 | Legendary leopard sightings; 7-platform treehouse camp |
| Singita Ebony Lodge | Sabi Sand | Ultra-luxury | R25,000–35,000 | South Africa’s most acclaimed lodge; extraordinary food and guiding |
| Singita Castleton | Sabi Sand | Ultra-luxury | R120,000+ (whole camp) | Private exclusive use, for groups |
| Savanna Private Game Reserve | Sabi Sand | Luxury | R12,000–18,000 | Smaller, intimate, 12 suites |
| Ulusaba Rock Lodge | Sabi Sand | Luxury | R10,000–16,000 | Dramatic hilltop position; Richard Branson’s original lodge |
| Thorntree River Lodge | Timbavati | Luxury | R8,000–14,000 | More affordable Timbavati entry; white lion territory |
| Tanda Tula Safari Camp | Timbavati | Mid-luxury | R7,000–10,000 | Classic canvas camp, authentic feel |
All rates are all-inclusive (accommodation, all meals, game drives, park fees, laundry). Usually minimum 2-night stay. Most fly-in from Johannesburg (Phalaborwa or Hoedspruit airports).
Budget consideration: A 3-night stay at Singita for two people costs approximately R150,000–210,000 (£6,000–8,500). Thorntree or Tanda Tula for 2 nights costs R28,000–40,000 for two — genuinely life-changing safari at a fraction of the top end.
See the budget and costs guide for how to plan spending across the whole trip.
The Panorama Route
The Panorama Route is a scenic drive along the edge of the Drakensberg escarpment, connecting Graskop to Tzaneen via the R532 and R36. Most visitors do it on the way to or from Kruger — driving from Johannesburg via Graskop adds 2–3 hours but is worth every minute.
Key Stops
| Stop | Entry fee | Time needed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blyde River Canyon viewpoints | Free | 1–2 hours | Third-largest canyon in the world; Three Rondavels is the signature viewpoint |
| God’s Window | Free | 30 minutes | Cliff edge over the Lowveld, 1,000 m below; arrive before 10:00 before cloud builds |
| Bourke’s Luck Potholes | R100 adult | 45 minutes | Geological formations at river confluence; well-maintained boardwalks |
| Berlin Falls | Free | 20 minutes | Roadside waterfall, easily accessible |
| Lisbon Falls | Free | 20 minutes | Another roadside waterfall; swimming pool at base |
| Pilgrim’s Rest | Free (town) | 30 minutes | Victorian gold rush town preserved as a monument |
| Graskop Gorge Lift | R200 adult | 45 minutes | Glass-bottom gondola descending into the gorge |
Graskop is the most useful town on the route — petrol, good accommodation, and Harrie’s Pancakes (a local institution for lunch: the pancakes are enormous). Plan to stop here.
Allow a full day to drive the route properly (Graskop to Phalaborwa or White River as a base). Don’t rush it — there are too many viewpoints to time well if you’re trying to reach a camp by dark.
Getting to Mpumalanga
Fly: OR Tambo (Johannesburg) to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) near Nelspruit/White River — Airlink runs multiple daily flights, approximately 1 hour. From KMIA, hire car or transfer to your first camp.
Drive: Johannesburg to Numbi Gate (near White River) — 4–5 hours on the N12/N4. This is the most common approach, and combining it with the Panorama Route is the standard format.
Fly-in to Hoedspruit or Phalaborwa for northern Kruger or private reserves in that region.
See getting around South Africa for car hire and domestic flight prices.

Gateway Towns (Outside the Park)
White River and Hazyview are the main service towns west of Kruger — useful for a first or last night when flights don’t align with park arrival:
| Property | Town | Category | Rate from | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jatinga Country Lodge | White River | Mid-range | R1,600 | Pool, gardens, 15 km from Numbi gate |
| Sabi River Sun | Hazyview | Mid-range | R1,400 | On the Sabi River, good pool, restaurant |
| Hippo Hollow Country Estate | Hazyview | Mid-range | R1,800 | Riverside gardens, family-friendly |
| Numbi Hotel | Hazyview | Budget | R800 | Basic, functional, genuinely cheap |
| Fig Tree Backpackers | Hazyview | Budget | R350 dorm | The backpacker option near Kruger |
Sabie and Graskop for Panorama Route nights:
| Property | Town | Rate from | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sabie Town House | Sabie | R1,200 | Small guesthouse, mountain setting |
| Graskop Gorge Lift Lodge | Graskop | R1,500 | Attached to the Gorge Lift attraction |
| Graskop Hotel | Graskop | R900 | Historic, basic, central |
Nelspruit/Mbombela (province capital, 60 km south of White River) has the most accommodation choice — chain hotels including Protea, Holiday Inn, and Garden Court from R800. Useful if you have an early morning KMIA flight.
Practical Notes
| Best time for safari | May–September (dry season — best visibility) |
| Avoid for malaria | October–April (highest risk; heat also severe) |

| Road type | Tar between camps; some gravel loops. Standard car is fine. |
| Speed limit | 50 km/h tar; 40 km/h gravel. Go slower. |
| Fuel | Available at Skukuza, Satara, Lower Sabie, Letaba, Punda Maria. Fill up at every opportunity. |
| Getting around | Car hire from Joburg is the standard. Guided tours also run from Joburg. |
