South Africa Safari Cost — Budget, Mid-Range, and Luxury Tier Breakdown

· 7 min read Practical
Leopard resting in long grass on an African safari, South Africa

South Africa offers a wider range of safari price points than any other African country. At the bottom end, a self-drive Kruger safari is genuinely affordable — comparable in cost to a European city break. At the top end, Sabi Sands lodges charge more per night than most five-star hotels in London. Both ends of the spectrum deliver outstanding experiences; they are simply different experiences.

This breakdown covers what you actually pay at each tier, what that money includes, and which type of traveller each suits. For full Kruger park logistics, see the Kruger self-drive safari guide. For a camp-by-camp route plan, see the 5-day Kruger itinerary.

The Three Tiers

Tier 1 — Budget Self-Drive (ZAR 600–1,500 per person per day)

Self-drive Kruger National Park is the entry point into South African safari and one of the best wildlife experiences in the world at any price level. You drive yourself through 20,000 km² of savanna in a standard hire car, staying in SANParks rest camps.

What you pay (as of 2026):

  • Conservation fee: ZAR 440 per person per day
  • Vehicle fee: ZAR 204 per vehicle per visit (one charge, not per day)
  • Rest camp accommodation:
    • Camping: ZAR 350–500 per site per night
    • 2-bed chalet (self-catering): ZAR 800–1,400 per night
    • 4-bed chalet: ZAR 1,600–2,800 per night
  • Car hire: ZAR 500–800 per day for a standard compact with full CDW — compare rates before you book

Book accommodation through the SANParks reservation system at sanparks.org. Book 3–4 months ahead for dry season (May–September), 6+ months for peak July–August.

Who it suits: Independent travellers, anyone comfortable driving unfamiliar roads, first-time visitors to Africa on a controlled budget, families.

Who it doesn’t suit: Travellers who want guides, night drives (not permitted in self-drive vehicles), off-road driving, or bush walks without arranging separately.

Tier 2 — Mid-Range Guided Safari (ZAR 3,000–8,000 per person per day)

Mid-range sits between the public park and full-luxury private reserves. It includes guided day safaris from nearby towns, tented camps within or adjacent to private reserves, and mobile camping safaris.

Option A: Guided day safari from Hazyview or White River

Multiple operators run guided game drives into Kruger departing from Hazyview (the main town near Paul Kruger Gate). Prices:

  • Shared open-vehicle game drive (4–6 hours): ZAR 800–1,500 per person
  • Full-day guided safari with lunch: ZAR 1,500–2,500 per person
  • Sunrise drive: ZAR 600–1,000 per person

Accommodation nearby (outside the park, no conservation fees):

  • 3-star guesthouses in Hazyview or Bushbuckridge: ZAR 800–1,600 per person per night B&B
  • Kapama River Lodge (4-star, private concession on park boundary): from ZAR 3,500 per person all-inclusive

Option B: Tented camps within private concessions

The Kruger park has private concessions where smaller operators run tented camps with twice-daily guided drives. These provide the private reserve experience at lower cost.

Inyati Game LodgeSabi Sandsfrom ZAR 4,500

Garonga Safari CampMakalalifrom ZAR 5,000

All-inclusive means: accommodation, all meals, twice-daily game drives, and drinks in most cases. Conservation fees not applicable for private concessions — included.

Who it suits: Travellers who want guided experiences without the luxury price tag, first-time safari visitors who prefer expert guidance, people staying in the Hazyview area and day-tripping into the park.

Tier 3 — Luxury Private Reserves (ZAR 8,000–30,000+ per person per day)

The top tier. Private reserves adjoining Kruger’s western boundary — Sabi Sands, Timbavati, Klaserie, MalaMala, Thornybush, Kapama — operate unfenced adjacent to the national park, meaning the same wildlife (including the Big Five) moves freely between park and reserve.

What private reserves offer that Kruger cannot:

  • Guided game drives in open 4x4 vehicles with an experienced ranger and a tracker, typically twice daily
  • Off-road driving — rangers track animals off the road network, dramatically improving sighting quality and proximity
  • Night drives with spotlights — illegal in Kruger’s public sections; standard on private reserves
  • Bush walks with armed rangers — on foot through the reserve
  • All-inclusive — accommodation, all meals, all game drives, and drinks are typically included

Named private reserve lodges (rates per person, all-inclusive, as of 2026):

MalaMala Main CampMalaMalaZAR 18,000
Londolozi Tree CampSabi SandsZAR 20,000
Singita Ebony LodgeSabi SandsZAR 27,000

A 3-night stay for two people at Tanda Tula (the most accessible entry point into quality private reserves) runs approximately ZAR 48,000–52,000. At Singita, the same 3 nights costs ZAR 160,000+.

What drives prices in private reserves:

  • Sabi Sands is the most famous reserve (historically the best leopard sightings) and the most expensive
  • Timbavati is adjacent to central Kruger and offers white lion territory; more affordable than Sabi Sands
  • MalaMala is one of the oldest private reserves and has an extraordinary sighting record
  • Number of rooms: camps with fewer than 12 rooms are more exclusive and typically more expensive
  • Season: dry season (May–September) commands peak rates; wet season is 20–30% lower

Transfers: Most private reserve lodges are accessed by light aircraft from OR Tambo or Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, then road transfer. A seat on a shared flight Cape Town–Kruger area costs ZAR 4,000–8,000 return. Factor this in.

Who it suits: Couples celebrating a milestone, experienced safari travellers who want maximum sighting quality, travellers with limited time who want guaranteed guide expertise.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest way to do a safari in South Africa?
Self-drive Kruger National Park is the most affordable safari in Africa. International visitor fees are ZAR 440 per person per day + ZAR 204 per vehicle. Rest camp accommodation (camping or basic chalets) adds ZAR 350–1,200 per night. Total per-person cost for a 5-day self-drive runs ZAR 4,000–8,000 all-in, including car hire.
How much does a luxury safari in South Africa cost?
Luxury private game reserves (Sabi Sands, Timbavati, MalaMala) cost ZAR 8,000–30,000+ per person per night all-inclusive. A 3-night stay for two people at a mid-luxury lodge (e.g. Tanda Tula, Ulusaba) runs ZAR 48,000–120,000 total. Flights to Hoedspruit or Skukuza are additional.
What is the difference between Kruger and a private reserve?
In Kruger you self-drive on public roads and stay in SANParks rest camps. Private reserves (Sabi Sands, Timbavati) adjoin Kruger and have luxury lodges with twice-daily guided game drives in open 4x4 vehicles. Private drives go off-road and include spotlight night drives — both impossible in Kruger's public sections.
