The dramatic Amphitheatre rock face in the Royal Natal National Park in the Drakensberg mountains

KwaZulu-Natal Travel Guide — Durban, Drakensberg, and Hluhluwe

KwaZulu-Natal: Durban's beaches, Drakensberg hiking, Hluhluwe–iMfolozi game reserve, and iSimangaliso Wetland Park on South Africa's subtropical east coast.

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is the most geographically diverse of South Africa’s provinces. Within its borders you’ll find warm Indian Ocean beaches, the cathedral-like rock faces of the Drakensberg, Africa’s oldest game reserve, and one of the continent’s great wetland ecosystems. It’s undervisited relative to the Western Cape and Kruger — which works in your favour.

For regional context, see the South Africa country guide. Durban has its own detailed city guide with accommodation, food, and beach detail. If you’re adding KZN to a bigger SA trip, the 14-day South Africa itinerary shows how it connects.

Durban

South Africa’s third city and the busiest port on the African continent. Durban’s signature is the Indian Ocean — warm water year-round (22–28°C), good beaches, and a curry culture unlike anywhere else in South Africa. See the full Durban guide for detail on beaches, restaurants, uShaka Marine World, and where to stay.

Quick reference:

  • Beach swimming: year-round, shark-netted Golden Mile
  • Best curry: Goundens (Grey Street), Patel’s Vegetarian, The Oyster Box’s curry buffet
  • Best hotel: Beverly Hills Hotel, Umhlanga (from R3,500)
  • Budget hostel: Tekweni Eco Backpackers (from R350 dorm)

The Drakensberg

The Drakensberg is the great escarpment forming KZN’s western border into Lesotho. Its Zulu name is uKhahlamba — “Barrier of Spears.” The highest points reach 3,400 m.

Royal Natal National Park (Northern Berg)

The most dramatic section. The Amphitheatre — an 8 km curved basalt cliff rising 500 m in a single sweep — is one of the most imposing rock walls in the world. Tugela Falls (983 m total drop) is debated as either the world’s second or first-highest waterfall. It runs strongest in summer (December–February) after rainfall.

Entry: R204 per adult per day (SANParks 2025/26 international rate).

Hiking options:

WalkDifficultyDurationWhat you see

Amphitheatre viewpointEasy–moderate2 hours returnFull cliff face
Chain Ladder route (top of escarpment)StrenuousFull dayTop of falls, plateau, Lesotho views
Sentinel Peak (Witsieshoek)Moderate5 hours returnEscarpment access from Free State side

The chain ladder route involves two fixed steel ladder sections up a near-vertical rockface — exposed but not technical. No ropes or experience required beyond fitness and good boots.

Central Berg (Cathedral Peak / Champagne Valley)

Less dramatic but more accessible for families and casual hikers. Cathedral Peak offers outstanding day hikes. The Midlands/Central Berg resorts (Champagne Valley, Cathkin Park) are comfortable bases with mountain views.

Most “full board” berg hotels include all meals and guided walks in the rate — this adds value compared to what appears to be a high nightly cost.

Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Game Reserve

240 km north of Durban (2.5 hours on the N2 then north), Hluhluwe–iMfolozi is the oldest proclaimed game reserve in Africa (1895) and the place where the southern white rhino was saved from extinction in the 1950s — the reserve had just 50 individuals left. Today KZN’s reserves hold the largest white rhino population in the world.

Wildlife: White rhino (excellent numbers), black rhino (present but harder to find), elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, cheetah, wild dog, hippo. The Big Five are here.

Entry: R204 per adult per day (international, 2025/26 SANParks).

Malaria: Yes — take prescription prophylaxis before your visit.

Self-drive: A good road network covers both the Hluhluwe and iMfolozi sections. Standard hire car is adequate. The Hluhluwe section is more accessible (tarred main road); iMfolozi is more remote and rewarding for serious wildlife watching.

Phinda Private Game Reserve (north of Hluhluwe, MalaMala/Singita equivalent for KZN) offers the full luxury guided safari experience at around R10,000–20,000 per person per night all-inclusive. &Beyond operates Phinda; renowned for rhino conservation work and consistently exceptional guiding.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park

South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site (1999). 220,000 hectares of coast and lake covering three major lakes (St Lucia, Sibaya, Kosi Bay), coral reefs, hippo and crocodile, sea turtle nesting beaches (leatherback and loggerhead turtles lay eggs November–February), and mangrove forests.

Entry: R204 per adult per day (SANParks 2025/26).

Malaria area — take prophylaxis.

St Lucia Town and Estuary

The main hub is St Lucia village on the estuary — famous for hippos that graze on the lawns at night and cross the main road. Genuinely extraordinary. Stay at least one night.

Estuary boat cruise (R150–220, 2 hours): Reliable hippo and crocodile sightings, bird-rich; departs from the bridge. Bookable through any guesthouse in St Lucia.

Self-drive loops in the park cover the eastern shores and the wetland fringe.

Sodwana Bay

3.5 hours north of Durban, Sodwana has South Africa’s best scuba diving: warm (24–28°C), clear water, coral reefs starting at 10 m, and 1,200+ species of fish. PADI dive courses, two- and seven-mile reef dives, and seasonal whale shark diving (June–November) are all available.

Diving operators: Sodwana Bay Lodge Dive School (long-established, reliable) and African Dive Adventures are the two main operators. Shore dives start at R250; reef dive trips R400–600.

The Midlands Meander

The Midlands — between Pietermaritzburg and Mooi River — is a gentle agricultural plateau of rolling hills, arts studios, cheese farms, and craft workshops. The Midlands Meander is a self-drive route connecting them. Midmar Dam and Spioenkop Nature Reserve are in the area. Good for a day drive from Durban (1.5 hours) or a weekend stop on the way to the Drakensberg.

Key stops: Nottingham Road Brewery, Swissland Cheese (farm dairy), Mooi River Toll Gate area for arts studios.
