Malawi Airlines has introduced a second daily service between Lilongwe (LLW) and Johannesburg OR Tambo (JNB), launching from 24 August 2026 and adding a late-afternoon departure to a route that previously ran only in the mornings.

What’s Changed on the Route

The new flights operate daily except Mondays. Northbound, the Johannesburg departure is at 20h00, arriving in Lilongwe at 22h15. Southbound, Lilongwe departs at 16h50 and touches down in Johannesburg at 19h05, making it a practical connection for travellers finishing afternoon meetings or sightseeing days before flying onward.

Both the new and existing services are now operated on Boeing 737 aircraft, replacing smaller regional jets. The upgrade brings a step up in comfort: Business Class seats are available on both legs, and total capacity on the route has increased meaningfully.

Why This Matters for Visitors

Johannesburg is the natural entry point for travellers heading to Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga’s Panorama Route, or the game reserves of Limpopo. It is also the economic hub most connected visitors use when combining a Southern African trip - a few days in Malawi, time on Lake Malawi, then onwards to South Africa for safari.

The new departure timing means travellers can now spend a full day in Lilongwe, Liwonde National Park, or at a Lake Malawi lodge before catching a mid-evening flight to Johannesburg and landing at a manageable hour. Previously, the sole morning service required early starts or an overnight in Lilongwe before departure.

The Blantyre Connection

Malawi Airlines continues to serve Johannesburg via Blantyre on its existing schedule - a separate service that remains in place. The direct Lilongwe–Johannesburg leg now runs independently, giving passengers a choice of routing and timing depending on where in Malawi their visit begins or ends.
