South Africa in April: Weather, Crowds and What to Do

· 3 min read Practical
South Africa in April

April is one of South Africa’s most underrated months. Cape Town transitions from summer to autumn with warm, settled weather; Kruger’s dry season kicks in with noticeably improved game viewing; and crowds are minimal — except during Easter week, which brings South African school holidays.

Cape Town and the Western Cape

April in Cape Town is mild and pleasant: temperatures in the 18-24°C range, decreasing wind, and a soft quality of light that makes the mountain scenery particularly beautiful. Early April is often still warm and dry. By late April, the first rains of the Cape winter arrive — but they’re typically brief and followed by clear days.

The beaches are quiet. Clifton and Camps Bay are uncrowded and lovely for walking even if the weather isn’t warm enough for swimming. The Cape Peninsula drive is excellent in April — clear days with autumn light and virtually no crowds at Cape Point or Boulders Beach.

Table Mountain’s cable car runs frequently in April when weather allows. Hikers find April conditions excellent — cooler than summer but with long enough days to complete longer routes comfortably.

Easter: South African school Easter holidays bring a domestic travel surge. If your dates fall over Easter, book accommodation earlier than you otherwise would. Hotel prices during Easter week can spike 30-50% in popular areas, approaching December-level rates for the holiday weekend itself.

AfrikaBurn — Tankwa Karoo

AfrikaBurn, South Africa’s answer to Burning Man, takes place in the Tankwa Karoo desert (roughly 4 hours from Cape Town) in late April or early May. The event brings together thousands of participants for a week of large-scale art installations, mutant vehicles, fire performances, and communal living under a gift economy. Tickets sell out months in advance and the event is entirely self-reliant — there are no vendors on site. If you’re interested, plan well ahead. Even if you’re not attending, be aware that Cape Town accommodation and car hire can be affected during AfrikaBurn week.

Kruger and Safari

April is when the dry season seriously begins in Kruger. Rainfall drops sharply, the bush thins out, and the landscape shifts from lush green to golden-brown. Animals start concentrating around reliable water sources — the pan waterholes and rivers within the park — making game-viewing drives increasingly productive.

Temperatures in April are very comfortable: highs of 28-32°C, nights cooling to around 14-16°C. Malaria risk is decreasing as the dry season advances but prevention medication is still recommended.

This is a transitional month — not quite as good as June-August for Big Five sightings, but dramatically better than the green season months. Prices at SANParks camps and private lodges are significantly lower than the July-August peak, making April one of the best value months for a safari.

Garden Route and Eastern Cape

April is excellent on the Garden Route. The summer crowds have gone, temperatures are pleasant (20-22°C), and the scenery is at its most colourful as the fynbos transitions. This is one of the best months to drive the route — Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, and Tsitsikamma are all uncrowded and accessible. Whale-watching season hasn’t started yet.

Addo Elephant National Park is excellent year-round and April’s mild temperatures make game drives comfortable. It remains malaria-free.

Regional Climate Differences

April highlights South Africa’s three distinct climate zones clearly. Cape Town (Mediterranean climate) is transitioning from dry summer to wet winter. Johannesburg and the highveld (summer rainfall region) are seeing the last of their summer thunderstorms, with dry, clear autumn weather establishing. Durban (subtropical) remains warm and humid at 24-27°C with occasional rain. These differences mean a well-planned April trip can combine autumn Cape Town with dry-season safari conditions in the northeast.

Practical Notes

  • Easter week accommodation across all regions should be booked well ahead
  • AfrikaBurn tickets and logistics require months of advance planning
  • Kruger SANParks camps in April still require advance booking even at lower occupancy
  • April is one of the best value-for-money months across the country outside Easter week
