South Africa in October: Weather, Crowds and What to Do

South Africa in October

October brings Cape Town into its best springtime stride, with warm temperatures, wildflowers on the mountain slopes, and the summer crowds not yet arrived. For Kruger, October is a transitional month — excellent early in the month, variable by month’s end as the rains begin. Prices remain well below December peak, making October one of the strongest value months for a South Africa trip.

Cape Town — Spring Peak

October is one of the best months for Cape Town. Temperatures reach 20–25°C (rising to 28°C by late October), the city is green and flowering, and the tourist crowds of December and January are still weeks away. Table Mountain is reliably accessible by cable car (return tickets approximately ZAR 395 for adults as of 2026), and the hiking conditions are superb — Lion’s Head at sunset is particularly rewarding in October, with clear skies and warm evenings.

The Cape Peninsula in October is a highlight: the spring fynbos flowering is finishing but still visible, Boulders Beach is peaceful (entry approximately ZAR 176 for international adults as of 2026), and the Cape Point area is easy to explore without queues. Entry to the Cape of Good Hope section costs approximately ZAR 376 for international visitors. Day trips from Cape Town are simple and relaxed — we recommend combining Boulders Beach, Cape Point, and a fish-and-chips stop in Kalk Bay into a single day.

Where to stay: October prices in Cape Town sit comfortably below peak season. The Atlantic Seaboard (Camps Bay, Sea Point) offers mid-range hotels from approximately ZAR 2,200–4,500 per night. Guesthouses in the City Bowl and Gardens area start from approximately ZAR 1,000–1,500 per night. For budget travellers, hostels along Long Street and in Green Point offer dorms from approximately ZAR 350 per night.

Where to eat: October is a relaxed month for dining in Cape Town — walk-ins are possible at most restaurants. The Pot Luck Club in Woodstock (small plates from approximately ZAR 95–180) and Harbour House at Kalk Bay (seafood mains from approximately ZAR 160–290) are both excellent. For casual eating, the V&A Food Market offers a range of options from approximately ZAR 60–120 per meal.

The Winelands

The Winelands are lovely in October — the harvest is finished and the vines are leafing out with new growth. Restaurant bookings are easy and prices are pre-summer. Stellenbosch wine tastings typically cost approximately ZAR 60–120 per person for a standard flight, with premium tastings up to ZAR 250 at estates like Delaire Graff and Tokara (where the views are as good as the wine).

Franschhoek is quieter in October than in December. The Tram Wine Tour (approximately ZAR 280 per person as of 2026) is a popular way to visit multiple estates without driving. For a meal, Babel at Babylonstoren (mains approximately ZAR 150–250) serves produce from the estate’s garden, and booking in October is straightforward.

Accommodation in the Winelands ranges from boutique guesthouses in Stellenbosch (from approximately ZAR 1,500 per night) to the more upscale estates in Franschhoek (from approximately ZAR 3,500 per night).

Kruger — Transition Month

October is variable for Kruger. Early in the month, the dry-season conditions that made June–September so productive continue — waterholes are critical for animal activity, and the thin vegetation means sightlines are good. By mid-October, rain can begin arriving — initially sporadic but enough to trigger the first flush of green vegetation. By late October, the first green shoots are emerging and game viewing starts to become more challenging as the bush fills in.

If you’re visiting Kruger in October, aim for early to mid-October for the best dry-season conditions. SANParks conservation fees cost approximately ZAR 440 per adult per day for international visitors as of 2026. Prices are lower than August — self-catering chalets at Skukuza and Lower Sabie camps run approximately ZAR 1,200–1,600 per night for two people, compared with ZAR 1,500–2,000 during the July–August peak.

Private lodges in reserves adjacent to Kruger (Sabi Sand, Manyeleti) offer all-inclusive packages from approximately ZAR 4,500 per person per night including meals, drinks, and guided drives. MalaMala, Londolozi, and Singita are among the most established options in the Sabi Sand.

Malaria prevention medication is required for Kruger. Consult a travel health professional at least two weeks before your trip.

Garden Route

October is excellent on the Garden Route. Spring temperatures (18–22°C), low rainfall, and the tail end of wildflowers make it one of the nicest months for the coastal drive. Tsitsikamma National Park (entry approximately ZAR 304 for international adults as of 2026) and the suspension bridge trail are at their most manageable without the summer crowds.

In Knysna, the Featherbed Nature Reserve boat and 4x4 trip (approximately ZAR 695 per adult) and the Knysna Lagoon are highlights. Plettenberg Bay is quieter in October than in December — Robberg Nature Reserve (entry approximately ZAR 76) offers a spectacular coastal hike of two to four hours depending on route. Garden Route guesthouses are available from approximately ZAR 800 per night.
