Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park sits approximately 280 kilometres north of Durban on the N2. For most visitors the choice is between staying inside the park at one of the three SANParks camps, basing yourself in the small town of Hluhluwe (15 km from Nyalazi Gate), or using St Lucia β€” the iSimangaliso gateway town 60 km to the east β€” as a combined base for both parks.

Malaria note: The entire Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and iSimangaliso area is a malaria zone, particularly from October to May. Consult a travel health clinic before arriving and take antimalarial prophylaxis as directed. Wear long sleeves from dusk and use DEET repellent. This applies whether you are sleeping inside the park camps or in Hluhluwe town.

Inside the Park: SANParks Rest Camps

SANParks operates three camps within Hluhluwe-iMfolozi. Staying inside the park means you can be on the game roads before first light without the drive from town β€” a meaningful advantage for serious game viewing.

Search accommodation in Hluhluwe on Booking.com

Hilltop Camp (Hluhluwe section) is the main camp and the most comfortable. It sits on a ridge in the northern Hluhluwe section with sweeping views across the forested valley β€” the sunset from the restaurant deck is one of the best in any South African park camp. Accommodation ranges from well-maintained two-bed chalets to larger family units and a small number of tented options. Chalets with kitchen from approximately R1,300 per night for two people as of 2026. The camp has a restaurant, shop, swimming pool, and guest kitchen. Guided game drives in open vehicles depart from Hilltop at dawn and dusk β€” book through SANParks at the time of reservation. Best for: visitors who want comfort, a restaurant, and access to the Hluhluwe section (best for elephant and rhino sightings on the forested ridges).

Mpila Camp (iMfolozi section) is the quieter, more remote option. The iMfolozi section is lower, flatter, and more open than Hluhluwe β€” better lion and buffalo habitat. Mpila has basic chalets and canvas safari tents with en-suite facilities. From approximately R900 per night for a two-bed chalet as of 2026. There is no restaurant β€” a guest kitchen is available, and you should bring supplies from Hluhluwe town before entering. Best for: experienced bush travellers wanting solitude and a raw, less curated camp experience.

Centenary Centre is primarily used for SANParks youth and educational programmes and has very limited public availability. Not a reliable booking option for independent visitors.

Book SANParks camps well in advance β€” Hilltop in particular fills months ahead for peak season (June–September) and South African school holidays.

Hluhluwe Town

The small town of Hluhluwe (not to be confused with the park) is 15 kilometres from Nyalazi Gate on the N2. It has a petrol station, a small supermarket, an ATM, and a handful of guesthouses and self-catering properties.

Budget (approximately R600–R1,000 per night as of 2026): Basic B&B rooms in the residential areas around the main street. Functional, clean, and well-suited as a single-night stop before an early park entry.

Mid-range (approximately R1,000–R2,200 per night as of 2026): Several guesthouses and small lodges on the R22 between Hluhluwe town and the park gate offer gardens, air conditioning, braai facilities, and breakfasts. These properties combine convenient park access with more comfort than the town guesthouses. False Bay Eco Centre and several smaller lodge properties along this corridor are commonly booked.

Hluhluwe town suits practical self-drivers who want lower rates than in-park camps while keeping within a 15-minute drive of Nyalazi Gate. Stock up on supplies the evening before your park entry day β€” the gate is open from 05:00 and you do not want to lose the first two hours of morning light doing errands.

St Lucia as a Combined Base

St Lucia, the gateway to iSimangaliso Wetland Park, is approximately 60 km east of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi. It is a viable base for visiting both parks β€” particularly if your itinerary includes an estuary cruise, whale watching, or Cape Vidal. The drive between Nyalazi Gate and St Lucia takes about 45–50 minutes.

Budget (approximately R600–R1,100 per night as of 2026): Backpacker lodges and basic guesthouses in the town centre. St Lucia has a good backpacker scene and several small self-catering units popular with diving and fishing visitors.

Mid-range (approximately R1,000–R2,000 per night as of 2026): A number of well-appointed guesthouses and self-catering houses in St Lucia town and the surrounding bush areas. Elephant Lake Hotel, on the lagoon edge, is a popular mid-range option with en-suite rooms, a pool, and views across the estuary. Rates from approximately R1,400 per room as of 2026.

Luxury (approximately R3,500–R8,000+ per person per night as of 2026, full board): Isibindi iSodwana and Thonga Beach Lodge in the northern iSimangaliso section are fully inclusive lodges in a remote coastal wilderness setting β€” not in the town of St Lucia but accessed via charter vehicle. These are genuine fly-and-flop or boat-access lodge experiences. If you are looking at these properties, factor in additional transfer logistics from Richards Bay or Durban.

Private Game Lodges on the Park Boundary

A number of privately operated game lodges have established concessions on farmland adjacent to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi’s southern boundary. These offer guided game drives into the park (as permitted by SANParks concession agreements) or into their own game-fenced sections, and are typically more expensive than in-park camps but deliver a higher level of service and exclusivity.

These lodges typically operate on a dinner, bed, and breakfast basis (DBB) or full board, and include one game drive per day in the rate. Rates from approximately R2,800–R6,000 per person per night as of 2026 for a private lodge experience with guiding. Book direct or through a South Africa-based lodge reservations agent.

Practical Tips

Nyalazi Gate hours: Opens at 05:00 from October–March; 05:30 April–September. The gate closes one hour after park closing time (19:00 summer / 18:00 winter). If you are staying outside the park, plan your park day around these windows and allow time for road conditions β€” the camp roads inside Hluhluwe-iMfolozi are not always fast-driving.

Supplies: The last reliable supermarket before the gate is in Hluhluwe town. St Lucia also has a small supermarket. Buy supplies, drinking water, and braai wood before entering if you are staying at Mpila Camp (no restaurant).

Getting there: Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is approximately 280 km from Durban (3 hours via the N2). The nearest regional airport with scheduled connections is Richards Bay (RCB), approximately 100 km south β€” Airlink flies from Johannesburg and occasionally Cape Town. Most visitors self-drive from Durban or combine the park with a wider KZN road trip.
