Tsitsikamma is a 68-kilometre strip of protected coastline, indigenous forest, and river gorge at the eastern end of the Garden Route. The Tsitsikamma National Park — part of the Garden Route National Park — is the main draw: the suspension bridge at Storms River Mouth, the Otter Trail (South Africa’s most famous multi-day hiking trail), and bungee jumping from the Bloukrans Bridge (the world’s highest commercial bungee at 216 metres) are all here. Accommodation reflects the adventurous visitor base — less beach resort, more forest lodge and activity base camp.

There are two distinct anchor points: Storms River Village (the most common base, with most facilities) and Nature’s Valley (smaller, quieter, lagoon and beach focused). The actual national park gate and Storms River Mouth are separate from Storms River Village — allow 30 minutes for the drive in.

Storms River Village

Storms River Village is a small settlement on the N2, approximately 3 kilometres from the park entrance. It has restaurants, a small shop, the famous Tubes bar, and most of the region’s guesthouses and self-catering accommodation. Almost everything in the village is within walking distance — this is the practical base for outdoor activities.

Budget (approximately R600–R1,100 per night / USD 32–60 as of 2026): Several backpacker lodges and budget guesthouses operate in and around the village. Djuma Backpackers is well-established, with dorm beds (from approximately R250 per night) and private rooms, plus a social atmosphere suited to hikers and adventure sport visitors. Storms River Mouth Rest Camp (SANParks, inside the park) has oceanfront huts and forest chalets — see below.

Mid-range (approximately R1,200–R2,800 per night / USD 65–150 as of 2026): The majority of Storms River Village’s offering sits in this tier. Tsitsikamma Lodge and Spa is the largest and best-equipped property in the village — a thatched chalet resort set in cleared forest with a spa, restaurant, and fire-pit social area. Well-rated for families. Rates from approximately R2,200–R3,800 per chalet per night as of 2026 (chalets sleep two to four).

Luxury (approximately R3,500–R7,000+ per night / USD 190–380 as of 2026): A few upmarket forest lodges in the surrounding area offer more exclusive settings. These tend to be smaller (8–16 units), with private forest decks, outdoor showers, and closer integration with the natural environment. Misty Mountain Reserve, on the plateau above Storms River, is a popular option in this tier — game drives (plains game), forest walks, and uninterrupted views across the Tsitsikamma plateau. Rates from approximately R3,800–R6,500 per person per night as of 2026.

SANParks Rest Camp Inside the Park

Storms River Mouth Rest Camp (inside the national park, not to be confused with Storms River Village) sits directly on the coast where the Storms River meets the sea — one of the most dramatic settings of any rest camp in South Africa.

Accommodation options: oceanfront log cabins (some on stilts above the rocks), forest chalets set back among the yellowwood trees, and a caravan/camping area. Rates from approximately R550–R1,600 per unit per night as of 2026 depending on unit type and season.

The suspension bridge that is the iconic Tsitsikamma image is a 10-minute walk from the camp along a short trail. Walking down to it at sunrise — before day visitors arrive — is one of the finer experiences on the Garden Route.

Book via SANParks (sanparks.org) — standard 11-month advance booking applies; the oceanfront cabins are heavily sought after.

Nature’s Valley

Nature’s Valley is a tiny village at the western end of the Tsitsikamma section, approximately 30 kilometres west of Storms River Village. It sits between a lagoon and a white sand beach with forested slopes above — a World’s End level of quiet. The village has a small shop, one restaurant, and a handful of accommodation properties. There is no phone signal in much of the valley.

Self-catering and holiday homes (approximately R1,500–R4,000 per night as of 2026 for a property sleeping four to six): Nature’s Valley suits families and couples doing the Garden Route who want a genuinely unhurried stop. Several houses and cottages in the village are available for short lets via local agents. These are best booked two to three months ahead for the December–January peak.

Nature’s Valley Guest House: A small guesthouse with five rooms in the village, run by long-term locals. Rates from approximately R1,400–R2,000 per room per night as of 2026. The owners know the Otter Trail, Groot River Gorge walk, and lagoon kayaking conditions better than any guide.

The Otter Trail

The Otter Trail is a five-day, 41-kilometre hiking trail along the coast from Storms River Mouth to Nature’s Valley — one of South Africa’s most iconic wilderness hikes. Maximum 12 people per day on trail. SANParks opens bookings exactly 12 months ahead; it books out within hours for peak months (July–October). If you are planning a stay in Tsitsikamma around an Otter Trail attempt, confirm your booking first — then book accommodation for the nights before and after. Storms River Mouth Rest Camp at the trailhead is the obvious pre-trail base; Nature’s Valley for recovery afterward.

Getting There

Tsitsikamma/Storms River Village is 685 kilometres from Cape Town (approximately 6.5 hours via the N2) and 80 kilometres from Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha (approximately 1 hour). George Airport (GRJ), 200 kilometres west, is the closest commercial airport. A rental car is essential — there is no bus service into the village, and the national park entrance requires your own vehicle.
