South Africa in July: Weather, Crowds and What to Do

South Africa in July

July is South Africa’s peak safari month and peak school holiday month simultaneously — excellent wildlife viewing, but Kruger at its busiest. Book accommodation months ahead. Cape Town is cold and occasionally wet, but Hermanus is outstanding for whale watching.

Kruger — Peak Game Viewing

July delivers some of Kruger’s best game viewing of the year. The vegetation is at maximum density reduction — open veld, short grass, bare acacia — and every major waterhole becomes a theatre. Lions, elephants, buffalo, and hippos are predictable. Leopard sightings increase because there is simply less cover for them to hide behind.

Dawn temperatures drop close to freezing in the northern section. Dress accordingly: three warm layers for the open vehicle game drives at first light, shedding down to a single layer by 10am. Most camps provide blankets on vehicle drives, but confirm when booking.

South Africa’s school winter holidays run through July. SANParks camps fill months in advance. Book as early as possible — six months ahead is not excessive for July. Prices at private lodges surrounding Kruger also peak this month.

Whale Watching at Hermanus

July is excellent for whale watching. Southern right whales are present throughout Walker Bay in good numbers, and the whale crier (a Hermanus tradition) still calls sightings from the cliff path. July is slightly less busy than August, which sees the peak concentration of whales.

The new Hermanus Whale Festival takes place in late September, but whale numbers are already strong from late June. The cliff path walk is one of South Africa’s great free activities — 12 km of coastline access with whales breaching offshore.

Cape Town in July

July is the coldest and potentially the wettest month in Cape Town. Temperatures range from 9–16°C, cold fronts arrive regularly from the southwest, and the mountain is frequently shrouded in cloud. Table Mountain cable car runs when conditions allow, which can mean closures of several consecutive days.

What works well in Cape Town in July: the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town’s restaurant scene, the South African Museum and surrounding Company’s Garden, the Zeitz MOCAA contemporary art museum in the Silo District. These are all indoor-friendly activities that make cold days worthwhile.

For outdoor Cape Peninsula exploring (Cape Point, Boulders Beach), pick clear days — they exist even in July, and when the Cape is clear in winter, it’s spectacularly clear.

Namaqualand Wildflowers

Late July into August is when the Namaqualand flower season begins in the Northern Cape. The semi-arid landscape transforms with carpets of orange and yellow daisies after good winter rains. The Namaqua National Park and areas around Springbok are the main spots. It’s a long drive from Cape Town (roughly 5 hours), but a remarkable seasonal phenomenon.

Practical Notes

  • Book Kruger camps 4–6 months ahead for July — this cannot be overstated
  • Pack very warm layers for Kruger dawn drives
  • Malaria risk in Kruger is low in July (dry season) but prevention is still standard practice
  • Cape Town accommodation is at its cheapest of the year

How cold does it get in Kruger in July?
Early-morning temperatures in Kruger can drop to 4–8°C in July, particularly in the far north. Afternoons warm to 24–28°C. Warm layers are essential for dawn and dusk game drives.
