Where to Stay in Knysna: Lagoon Views, Heads, and Forest Retreats

Knysna splits neatly into three zones: the town centre and lagoon waterfront, Leisure Isle in the middle of the lagoon, and The Heads area where the channel meets the Indian Ocean. Each offers a different experience, and your choice shapes how the town feels. For most visitors, the waterfront or Leisure Isle strikes the right balance between convenience and scenery.

Town Centre and Waterfront

Knysna town sits above the lagoon on a series of hills, with the Waterfront precinct at the bottom - shops, restaurants, and views across the water to the Heads. Accommodation here is the most convenient for dining and evening walks.

Budget (approximately R550–R1,000 per night as of 2026): Knysna Backpackers on Queen Street is a long-running social hostel with private rooms and a rooftop deck. Several B&Bs on the hillside streets above the high street offer en-suite rooms in the R700–R900 range.

Mid-range (approximately R1,200–R2,800 per night as of 2026): Turbine Hotel & Spa is a converted power station on the waterfront, with an industrial-chic aesthetic, indoor pool, and a solid restaurant. It is probably the best-value mid-range choice in town. Garden Route Hotel Knysna has large rooms and a pool a short walk from the Waterfront.

Luxury (approximately R3,500–R7,000+ per night as of 2026): Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa sits on the cliffs east of The Heads on the Knysna National Lake Area boundary. The views over the lagoon mouth are exceptional and the golf course draws serious players. Rates include breakfast and there is a well-regarded spa.

Leisure Isle

A residential island in the middle of the Knysna Lagoon, accessible by a short bridge. Self-catering houses and guesthouses here offer lagoon frontage on both sides of the island - look for properties with a private jetty if you want kayak access. Accommodation is mainly three- to four-star guesthouses and holiday rentals.

Mid-range (approximately R1,500–R3,200 per night as of 2026): Leisure Isle Lodge has lagoon-facing rooms with a private jetty and is particularly good for families and self-catering arrangements. The island feels removed from the town’s foot traffic, which some guests appreciate and others find inconvenient (a ten-minute walk or short drive to restaurants).

The Heads and Eastern Knysna

The sandstone cliffs of The Heads are one of the most photographed landscapes on the Garden Route. The eastern head is accessible by road; the western head is private. A handful of upmarket guesthouses cluster near the eastern viewpoint.

Luxury (approximately R3,000–R6,500+ per night as of 2026): Phantom Forest Eco Reserve sits in the indigenous forest above the western lagoon bank and operates completely off-grid. Access is by 4x4 shuttle. The 14 suites are elevated tree houses with private decks and lagoon views - genuinely remote-feeling despite being minutes from town. Rex Hotel on the eastern approach to The Heads is a four-star option at a lower price point than Phantom Forest.

Garden Route Context

Knysna is typically visited as part of a Garden Route drive between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Most self-drive itineraries budget two to three nights here. If you are doing the full route, position Knysna centrally: it is two hours from Mossel Bay to the west and 75 minutes from Tsitsikamma to the east. Plettenberg Bay (30 minutes east) has broader beach accommodation options if sand is the priority.

Practical Notes

The 2017 Knysna fires destroyed significant residential areas but spared most tourist accommodation. Rebuilding has continued steadily. The lagoon and Heads were not directly affected. Prices peak over Christmas and Easter. Book Pezula and Phantom Forest at least two to three months ahead for December-January travel as availability is limited and they sell out early.
